Fast hatch around £4000 other than a Cupra R?

I had a Type R for 5 years. My wife had a Cupra (non R) for 18 months.

The Cupra is quieter, slightly better put together, will have better brakes if an R and will be marginally quicker. The engine in the Cupra sounds gash IMO. The gearbox is okay, steering feel is okay and better than the Type R. Lots and lots of electrical niggles with the Cupra. Much, much comfier for passengers. The interior looks dated compared to the Civic.

The Type R has slightly vague-feeling steering, nicer seats, an amazing gearbox (so much better than the Cupra), and an engine that will take so much abuse it's unreal. Sounds far, far better than the Cupra. Very reliable and no real niggles to speak of. Rear passenger comfort is non existent (the worst I can remember from a modern car).

In my current circumstance, I would buy another Type R over another Leon, for the epic engine and gearbox combo alone (massive grin factor). However, bringing into account the fact i do actually want proper comfort, a genuinely nice interior and a little more space with more toys, I would go for an ST220 (facelift model) per my previous post.

Better seats? The Cupra R seats are far better than the Cupra seats, and as for the dash, just lol. Audi a3 interior, or plastic fantastic nastiness that is the Civic? I know which I'd choose.

I wouldn't go that far regarding the Civic's plastics. Sure you aren't going to stroke your face against them and feel all smug inside but the interior is well screwed together, looks decent enough and has its buttons in logical places.

ST220 is the best shout here if you want to be nice and comfy and easily overtake.

Big cars though, very big compared to these hatchbacks mentioned.

GTi-R - You can get a tidy one for ~£4k, and it will make more than 280bhp without remaping.
