*** Official Nintendo Wii U thread ***

The price is the main issue after the lack of games, its official price is still £300 (I know it's been as low as £199), next to a £350 PS4 it looks very silly.

Is it not the case that the price is set by retailers in the EU? Still, madness for Nintendo to not at least push for more competitive pricing.

Though it's a slightly unfair to compare. You do get a game, 2 controllers and an HDMI cable (for what it's worth) in the premium bundle. And I'm not sure most people even paid that. My wife was savvy enough to get it a but less than that on launch.

It would be ridiculous for the Wii U to remain remotely near PS4 pricing come launch.

Nintendo will still have a set price that the retailers purchase it at, it's obviously not low enough for them to be aggressive enough. I'm sure most of the deals where it has dropped to £199 has had the retailers making a loss.

2 controllers in the premium bundle though?

Here's the lineup between now and the end of the year.

Pikmin 3 July
The Wonderful 101 August
New Super Luigi U August
Sonic Lost World October
The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD October
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze November
Super Mario 3D World December

Other than Super Mario 3D World I can't see any of those games causing a massive surge in sales, especially not at the current pricing.

3D Mario, Mario Kart and Smash Bros all this year could have made a difference though.

With both the PS4 and Xbone being launched this year I can see Nintendo getting lost in it all.

The ZombiU bundle had 2 controllers. It had the Pro pad. Sorry, I'm probably getting the bundles confused.

All of those games are potentially very, very good. Not going to win the Next Gen crowd but certainly is a massive boost. Particularly Mario I feel. We'll see.

Well to me it clearly shows Nintendo was extremely premature with the wiiu release. If they just waited until 2014 had an amazing release line up, possibly match or even out spec MS / Sonys new offering, coupled with some third party exclusives / third party support it would have been amazing.

To be fair regarding third party what can they do? As devs brush the platform at present. Maybe offer some sort of free upgrade to the machines? Scrap the current spec, and beef up the console?

I just dont see any urgency from nintendo though, the wiiu is on borrowed time at the moment and i doubt nintendo can pull this back whithout major changes.

I don't believe it will anyway be 'killed off'. Nor will they upgrade or beef up the console. I think Nintendo are convinced once their games start hitting the system, all will be fine. I think coupled with a price drop they might be alright anyway.

No idea, saw it in the HotUkDeals Facebook but didn't follow the link

They are offering an extra £20 on any console, tablet trade ins, not specific to the Wii U. But still £210 for the premium Wii U seems a decent offer as I imagine a price drop won't be far away.

Edit: further reading suggests you have to pre-order the Game PS4 bundle which comes with Killzone and another game.

I imagine the vast majority of those games were playable on the tablet only actually.

I know that. It wasn't really my point though. They've created a console with an expensive touchscreen controller that (so far) hasn't proven to be all that integral. IF they didn't have uses lined up (aside from using it as the console's main screen) then why did they bother? Without it and with £50-£100 off the price, they would have a much stronger offering.

We need big IPs, great games that put the touchscreen/second screen to good use and show off why the Wii U is unique, or we need a price drop. Until one of those comes, many of us are holding off.

By the time the ps4 is actually out (guessing nov) and you've done this trade deal, it's going to be around the time the big games start to trickle in for the Wiiu.

If you're not using it at present though Its a rather expensive paper weight to have. Also if you've made any purchases in the shop you'll lose them, if you plan to buy back on a hopeful price drop / game releases there's a few factors to consider.

If they haven't announced a price drop by the PS4 launch date, which is now confirmed as November then Nintendo are pretty screwed anyway since their official price is still £300 and who's going to buy a Wii U when the much stronger PS4 is only £49 more.

They really did need to have Mario Kart out this year, but Nintendo still seem to be struggling with Wii U development.

Well it was a tough decision but I'm selling my Wii U, nothing at E3 got me that excited, it just looks like the same gameplay with nothing really being added to make the most of the gamepad (aside from freeing up the TV but when you have a nice 40" TV that's not really necessary).

I might buy one again in 12-18 months but to be honest I think I'll be enjoying a PS4 enough that I won't come back.

Frankly, Nintendo have dropped the ball, they needed to do something with the time advantage but the lack of games and effective marketing means I am the only one of my friends with a Wii U (and I'm selling it). I hope things pick up as I like Nintendo as a company, they have just messed this one up.

I did say, directly under the bit you cut to, that I wondered what it would be used for as a second screen.

ZombiU utilised the second screen really well I felt. I've not really played many other games that use it in a similar fashion - I imagine AC3, Batman etc all used it for inventory items, maps and stuff.

Of the games shown so far, Pikmin must use it. I would have thought Zelda: WW would utilise it well, as would Mario Kart 8 etc. I completely agree that it appears under-used apart from off screen gaming.

They really did need to have Mario Kart out this year, but Nintendo still seem to be struggling with Wii U development.

Nintendo nearly always take longer than everyone thinks they should to release their games. I don't think it's exceptional to just the Wii U.

Mario Kart is probably their most popular non-Nintendo fan franchise, but there were quite a few very good games listed between July and Christmas. All Nintendo-made exclusives. How can they possibly do any more than that, really? Do Nintendo even have what you would class as a system seller in the UK/EU anymore? The most frequent criticism of Nintendo games is they are "for kids"... I don't think they're ever going to compete with the PS4/XB1 on the same playing field again. The Wii, a massive success commercially, is routinely ridiculed and complained about by "serious gamers".

I dunno. Seems like Nintendo are a bit confused themselves of their place in the world. For me, it's become the second console - awaiting the very best of the games I can play, that come few and far between.

I imagine Nintendo have held back with some of their games until the buzz has died down surrounding the release of Sony and Microsoft's consoles this Holiday period, then releasing games like Smash Bro's and Mario Kart early next year when Sony and Microsoft will have the inevitable quiet period. (IMO of course).

P.S Mario & Yoshi for the Nes is now available for 30p on the E-Shop.

as has been said many times nintendos biggest problem is getting games out for people to buy

my kids are champing at the bit for new games for their U. we're waiting Mario kart rayman legends i'm waiting on Zelda smash bros and a few others.

we're talking about 6 must buys for us at least and tbh the only thing that's kept my wii u getting any use has been lego city.

I honestly feel that the games are a year behind where they should be in terms of releases. we really needed to see strong titles at launch ie Zelda Mario kart etc.

even now 9 months after launch theres not more than a handful of decent titles to pick up
