ISPs to include porn filters as default in the UK by 2014

Look outside your little world, some parents don't know what an ISP is, how their router works, how the internet works or anything about PCs how are they meant to be able to install and monitor software when they wouldn't know the first the thing about it all.

There are these things called books. They're really are amazing things you know, they instruct people on how to do the most simple of tasks. Some of them even include pictures and diagrams for those people who are little bit on the divvy side.

Except this doesn't make sense, they are already blocking child porn, piracy sites, terrorist sites.

What about sites opposing the government incumbant, organising rallies or revealing secrets? Is a peaceful march in London a terrorist activity? It sure can be, if the government choose it to be!

The Government SHOULD block all child porn sites, it's in the interest of morality. Piracy of digital media for personal use is a civil issue, and even "terrorists" should be heard. Blocking the voice of a disaffectionate minority is another form of tyranny. What next? Don't like the weather? You're banned from the internet!

What about any off that? And what relevance does it have to his statement which makes no sense.
You might also want to go read my earlier posts which say I don't like it, before posting totally unrelated rants.

ISPs are forced to comply with blacklisting > sites added to blacklist by gov request > one more civil liberty eroded. Roll on Persuadatron guns and Utopia chipping

Pretty pointless and a waste of money, people looking for porn will work out how to circumvent it in no time at all.
Just goes to show how out of touch and technology ignorant most these politicians are :o

Also I'd be far more concerned about my nephews seeing snuff videos, shootings, stabbings and just general 'ultra' violence stuff on the net rather than a bit of the old in out in out :p
The worlds gone crazy! Can't show a bare boob or erect penis yet 'real' violent beatings, shootings, murders and genuinely shocking disturbing stuff is perfectly fine for youtube and/or British TV

This is a completely pointless exercise. If someone (even a kid) wants to view porn, they'll find it. Porn isn't just on "Porn sites" nowadays.

Nevertheless, it's probably just a cover up to install a blocking system in the first place. Porn will be the first to be blocked, but what next?

Well that's the thing - as you've said porn isn't just on porn sites... this filter in itself could well ban those 'other sites'... the likes of reddit etc.. could be filtered

OK fine but imagine you have a daughter, you have restricted her access and she is a decent person with boundaries and values, she's 15 and meets a 16 year old boy who's never had any restrictions on what he's seen and wants to to replicate what he has seen totally uncensored or limited, is that OK with you?

Okay... so your daughter's prospective boyfriends should come with a certificate saying they're not *****ed up?

They're all ****ed up. Just because they've not been able to watch hardcore porn on their parents internet (even if that's true) isn't going to make the ******* less ****ed up.

And she's more than likely a bigger **** up than them. If my experience counts for anything.

This won't even be a 'porn' filter.

The thing is, if its a parental guidance filter it will probably block a lot of things that may have dodgy content on it, even if its not dodgy content. I.e. your average imgur link is fine, but some are not parent friendly. That said, I expect ISPs would just blankly filter 'imgur.com'. The parental filters we used to have at school used to stop our teacher from showing us a lot of valid learning material with relation to Biology, for the sex ed stuff...

Basically it'll filter too much, and I expect most will remove it instantaneously...

In one thread we have people saying democracy doesn't work because the people are too stupid.
And then in the next thread they are saying leave it up to the parents.

So are they too stupid or not?
If they are then should we be trusting them to totally safeguard their children from potentially some pretty sick stuff?
Can we actually protect those children?
Is the safeguarding of those children more important than free-access to completely unrestricted content?
Is there anywhere else we have content so unrestricted is it unrealistic to expect it here?
Would it be better working with such a policy to ensure only certain things are blocked and who decides what gets blocked?

It's not the principle. It's the fact that when you phone up to opt out, you don't think your details will go on a list that would potentially be used to monitor 'opt-outs'?

there's a much easier way in my book

rather than opt out.

isp's send a letter to all customers would you like it on? (explaining what it is)

they reply yes/no

simples? no clever people required

How akward a phone call will be to disable this stuff....

"Yeah, I would like my porno on, thank you"

I've taken calls like that at work, from customers wanting their content control bar taken off their phone. I think the best I had was from a guy in his 60s. His words were something like.

"I watch certain channels on television, towards the end of the channel listings (porn channels obviously) and they offer certain services I want to take advantage of. They ask you to call or text a certain number and my phone wont let me. Can you help?"

I literally had to stuff my fist into my mouth while he was talking to muffle the laughing. It was just the way he was so coy and roundabout about the fact he was basically asking me to help him use porn services.
