ISPs to include porn filters as default in the UK by 2014

Will they be auto blocking any video that depicts violence (tv/film/news) e.t.c as well? Or is it just boobies and willies that are bad for our children?

As an example, i think it is TOTALLY bonkers that the biggest who-ha about the grand theft auto games was the hot coffee thing. This was a game where you can drive around and bludgeon random people to death, kill prostitutes, destroy anything in site.....yet the biggest problem with it was because it showed (badly) some pixels depicting a sex act??

And so begins the Great UK Firewall just as China has. Once it is in and porn is blocked, the people in those jobs won't just pack up and go home, they will want to keep their jobs and target other things to block. Gun videos on YouTube? Block them. Fail videos on YouTube may encourage children to act stupid - block them. News websites that do not report the government in a good light? Block them, etc, etc. I'm just glad I got out while the pound still held some value a few years ago.

So will they block tumblr then? How do you categorise millions of "blogs" within a service like that, do they just block the whole lot or just the ones that have too many tones of pink in the hosted images? Do they have flange recognition technology? :p

I think pornography can be incredibly damaging to young people and relationships. I don't think blocking it is the right approach, though. We need better education.

I think the word 'Education' is the key to a lot of problems.

I think that there needs to be more put in to educating children, rather than trying to stop them seeing things that people feel they shouldn't see.

Parents simply cant be bothered, OMG little timmy saw some boobies of a flash of ***** !!! Down with the internet, all internet users are filthy porn loving criminals bordering on paedo's.

Here's a thought...
Educate your children? Can't be bothered
Install parental Controls? Can't be bothered
Supervise your kids on the internet? Can't Be bothered

Whilst I'm all for making the internet a safer place for kids the onus really should be on the parents to ensure the kids know these things and to monitor/supervise them whilst on the internet, not down to some video of a random blonde doing things in a video to educate them.

As other have said once it's started it won't stop and we'll be paying via a banded system for our BB depending on what we want to do with it

Oh you want to stream? thats an extra £x a month
You want to game? thats an extra £x per month
You want the filter turned off? thats an extra £x per month
You want monitoring turned off? Reported to the police for suspected illegal activites

I'm sure teh government could fnid far better ways to spend money in this current climate.

If any ISP decided to charge more per month to take the filter off, people would just start using SSL VPNs.

ISPs are forced to comply with blacklisting > sites added to blacklist by gov request > one more civil liberty eroded. Roll on Persuadatron guns and Utopia chipping

So pretty much like the IWF which already exists and has been running for years?

It's not the principle. It's the fact that when you phone up to opt out, you don't think your details will go on a list that would potentially be used to monitor 'opt-outs'?

Does this happen with mobile phones if you call them to remove the parental blocks?

OK fine but imagine you have a daughter, you have restricted her access and she is a decent person with boundaries and values, she's 15 and meets a 16 year old boy who's never had any restrictions on what he's seen and wants to to replicate what he has seen totally uncensored or limited, is that OK with you?

No, that is a prime reason porn should not be "banned". Filtering and the multitude of other things we do to hide sex and the naked body just more things worse. We need to be more open about it rather than hiding it all in the closet. Frank discussions between parent/teacher/social worker and child are what are needed.

"Dad, my bf asked me to do "this" last night, I said no but don't know whether that's normal" or "mum, I saw this last night, is that normal?"

Not sneaking down in the middle of the night to serrupticiously browse the web or getting pressured in to things on a bench at the back of a park...

In the grand scheme of things this.is just another way for the prudish Victorian values to re-establish themselves. We're a modern, progressive nation, get with the times and as already mentioned why are we far less worried about our children seeing violence and murder (even simulated) than the occasional bit of boob and two people doing something that shouldn't hurt anyone.

Besides, if anyone thinks this will stop any child that wants to see porn (every child over the age of about 11) you're massively short sighted and naiive.

I've taken calls like that at work, from customers wanting their content control bar taken off their phone. I think the best I had was from a guy in his 60s. His words were something like.

"I watch certain channels on television, towards the end of the channel listings (porn channels obviously) and they offer certain services I want to take advantage of. They ask you to call or text a certain number and my phone wont let me. Can you help?"

I literally had to stuff my fist into my mouth while he was talking to muffle the laughing. It was just the way he was so coy and roundabout about the fact he was basically asking me to help him use porn services.

Meh, if it's anything like the t-mobile content blocker it'll be more like...

"Can you turn the ******* content filter off as it's blocking several large job sites and other completely innocent sites!"

I like the idea of people having to opt-out.

From then on, I will be trying to view porn at every house I visit. If I can view it, I will then look shamefully on the household..

"So that's what it's like in your house.."

Other things they should consider:

1. Obscene lyrics in songs
2. Perverse scenes in literature and the arts
3. Genesis 19:8
4. Pictures of rashes / sores / general sexual health / C4's Embarrassing Bodies

The mobile phone companies have been doing this for years this is a natural extension of that, two minute call or a web form if you want it turned off. For once it seems like a sensible piece of legislation to me which is a rare occurence!

It's just people having sex, it doesn't damage anything, get over it.

No, it's not just people having sex. Some of the 'harder' or more 'specialist' stuff can change the perception among many of what 'normal' is and what one should expect from a partner.

Without proper education, this has the potential to significantly damage relationships.

So educate. Don't restrict access to content because some people don't understand it. Porn is not a documentary, it's a movie, like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.
