I'm looking for a 2TB storage drive to go into my microserver and see that the Seagate drives are on this week only:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) HDD £67.99
Total : £76.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).

I'm just a bit concerned about a few of the reviews. Mentions of noises and clicks etc. Is there a larger than average failure rate on these or is it just that the noises are a bit disconcerting? The Microserver is tucked away in a cupboard so the noise won't be an issue, but obviously reliability is.

Or should I just bite the bullet and stump up the extra for a WD red? For mechanical drives I've never chosen anything but WD and fingers crossed have had very good reliability. 2TB is more than enough storage for now and the important data is backed up elsewhere so one drive will be plenty, although I may get another in the future to pool for some redundancy and to make things a bit easier in case of drive failure.

My brother had MASSIVE problems with his ST2000DM001 -- although this was a while back. He said there were 2 - 3 firmware upgrades in the space of a couple of months. Never a good sign for a drive (most drives never receive a single firmware upgrade). I haven't heard him complain any more, so maybe the last firmware upgrade did sort out all those issues.

The Reds give you 3 year warranty vs. the 1 year for the Seagate, plus all the other benefits of the Reds -- whether you choose to believe them or not is a personal thing; I love my 3TB Reds.

The cynic in me says that's why they're on T.W.O. - because they aren't selling well enough due to some people having problems.

I guess I'll end up going with the reds....

I'm not sure much can be inferred from t.w.o with regards as to whether the drives themselves are having problems or not.
I feel it's down to warranty. The 2 TB seagates come with 2 yr warranty while the 1TB and 3TB only the 1. The reds all feature 3 yr warranty and marketed 'NAS longevity features' and ppl are willing to pay a tenner more when at the normal pricing.

Had my ST2000DM001 9 months so far and no issues. Bought it the moment they upped the warranty (plus all other drive prices were beyond ridiculous at the time)

In my experience HD's are not worth premium prices. They're really not.

I've had plenty of HD's of every major brand over the years, I've had only one fail - AFTER 11 YEARS.

I've never had a failure either to be honest.

I had an original 36Gb Raptor (part of a RAID 0 array) that started to make a funny noise so I had it swapped under warranty, but it didn't actually fail. Its twin and the replacement are still going fine to this day.

I tend to agree, but when the price difference is relatively small, especially when factored over the lifetime of a drive (3 to 5 years), I figure you might as well get whatever seems most appropriate. In my case, for a NAS, if all other things are equal, I'll go for the highly-rated, well-regarded WD Red.

Of course it depends on the price diff and use. Not sure 'highly rated' and 'well-regarded' means much with HD'S though.

I know what's going to happen - I'll cave and buy the Seagates, then the WD reds will be back on offer tomorrow :D

I remember the deathstar saga which is why I'm faffing about now...

This would be an example of a drive that is *not* highly-rated or well-regarded. =)
You must be referring to the Deathstars. Here is an autopsy on one of the Deathstars: http://www.astro.ufl.edu/~ken/crash/index.html

I've always liked IBM/Hitachi drives. They're very reasonably priced, have a sensible warranty and have been reliable on all but one occasion.

I feel that a 1 year warranty tells me all that I need to know about a harddrive manufacturer’s confidence in the drive.

Western Digital get my 2nd best vote, even though I don't rate them nowhere highly as I do Hitachi drives.

Seagate and other drive makes are laughed aside.

Anyone taking HD's this seriously needs to get out more.

Every Seagate I have ever had has been perfect.

But there's always some people who will pay a premium for nothing....

To each their own. Horses for courses. Live and live. Etc...

I have a few of the Seagate Barracuda drives, 2TB and 3TB running in Microservers and a Time Capsule. Not had a problem. No noise, no different than my WD ones IMO.
