*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

I had to buy another 2amp s4 charger just for the office because trying to charge it off a 500ma usb port was driving me nuts! :o and I've got a couple of spare batteries for when I'm away from a plug for a couple of days :D

Nice one, you're well prepared. I accidentally swapped out my USB lead with my Nexus 4 USB lead and was wondering why my S4 was taking so long to charge, then I noticed my error and promptly swapped out the leads again along with the charger. I don't have time to wait for my S4 to fully charge up.

I carry a Proporta 3400 Turbo charger with me just in case I start to run low and it's ideal to get some extra juice on my commute. You can't be too careful these days :D

I picked up a anker 5200mah extended battery as well, but it's going back because it's absolutely massive and didn't give as much of a boost as I'd want for turning the phone into a brick.
Hopefully Samsung will bring an official one out like they did with the S3 that added a nice bit of extra juice without making the phone a stupid size.

For obvious reasons I dislike the extended batteries as it disfigures the phone to a gargantuan size. Good move on your part sending it back though.

Samsung for some reason take their own sweet time bringing out their own versions of the extended battery. It took quite a while for them to release one for the S3, I think once they get out all their stuff like S-Band and wireless charging kits, we may well see Samsung turn their attention to an extended battery. It will be a welcome addition :)

Anyone going to try the Google ROM..........?
I've not had a single issue with WiFi yet and I've tried Wanam, foxhound and CM10.1..... must just be lucky.
To be honest, in surprised I haven't bricked it yet because most of the time I don't know what I'm doing.

Hey bud, been busy?

Battery life on the S4 is pretty good I've found. I reckon I could get 4.5hrs screen on with ease where my S3 would only get just under 3.5hrs.

I'm looking forward to the JKay mod getting extra features over the next month as JKay great tweaks.

Great thing about the S4 over the S3 lte is the dev scene...so much more action

Anyone noticed any benefits running a custom kernel on the S4?

Hmmm seems like there are a lot of issues with the Google ROM. A lot of problems over at xda...
Would have thought it would be problem free as its the full system dump going onto the same phone.

Nope, all I've noticed is how ridiculous the battery life is in comparison to pretty much any phone I've used recently, thats including running CM10.1 in fairly beta condition and now wanamlite.

I'm easily going to bed with 30% and whilst I don't often listen to music or watch videos I do use my phone a LOT.

Right now I've got 50% left and I've been off charge for 10 hours with 2 hours 10 of screen time and an hour of calls. Nothing I've used recently could get anywhere near that. I also use pretty much 100% non auto brightness with a 1 minute screen timeout and the softkey lights on all the time the screen is.

That's the thing, it's not the full system dump yet, stock kernel missing.

So, I've had my S4 since launch day (I was the first to post pics on here :D). But since then I've not really looked into anything like rooting or whatever it is, as this is my first android.

Can anyone link me up to a custom ROM and a decent guide? I fancy having a play tonight. I'm finding I have to reboot my phone every few days as all the widgets freeze completely anyway!

@Nexus Cheers Mate, I thought the same hence why I downloaded the apk from XDA, I sure as hell wasn't going to give someone 84p for something he/she didn't create. Still the alternative's there if you want to apply the wallpaper and get the GE look.

Have got it via another method ;)

Not giving people money (regardless of the amount, it is the principle! :p) for something they have just ported/ripped of (unless they built upon it i.e. added more features etc.)

First step is to root then install custom recovery (need this to install zip files like custom roms and themes etc)

Easy way to root is to flash a pre-rooted rom from here - MF8 is the latest, so you'll root and update your rom at the same time.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250824

Pick:

Model: GT-I9505 (4.2.2)
PDA: XXUBMF8
PHONE: XXUBMF8
CSC: OXABMF8 (8 codes)
Kernel: 3.4.0-917495 (19.06)
Build Date: 19.06.2013

choose the below file

Pre-Rooted ROM Downloads: <<< Android Host >>>

Once you have downloaded the ROM, put your phone in download mode and open Odin and flash the ROM as PDA.

Watch this video on how to use odin:

Benefits of rooting:

- Proper adblocker
- Use extra settings in apps that need root access e.g. Nova launcher, hide time on desktop status bar
- Delete system apps (bloat)
- Make full app backups with games saves, app settings etc using Titanium Backup.

Next step is to install a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP. This enables you to install custom roms, tweaks, system wide themes etc.

I used i9505-cwm-recovery-6.0.3.2-5 from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2279579

You can also use it to make a backup image of your whole rom and settings.

Youtube is your friend - watch a load of videos. :)

And now I'm on Foxhound 0.5 custom ROM (Basically a tweaked Samsung ROM with AOSP theme and a few tweaks) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303239

May have already been discussed, But in 83 or so pages, It's difficult to find.

Custom Roms - Just flashed Foxhound 0.7 on my Galaxy S4, But still only have ~9gb space available? Surely the custom rom cant be using up all the space like touchwiz was? Any pointers here?

Still loving it though, The apps aren't in the drawer and it feels a little nippier aside from reboots.

it's a modified samsung rom. some apps are removed yes but you still have all the camera features, all the motion and air touchstuff etc etc. it's a brute of a rom base even without the samsung hub stuff.

Don't ask Bud, been doing all the tourist type things as we had family around. Am so knackered and broke now :(

Am really liking the S4, dare I say it more than my beloved S3 LTE, you're right the Dev scene is positively booming and that's a great thing. The best bit of it all is that most if not all the devs having things in the pipeline for the S4 and as you said JKay mod will be a welcome addition to all the tweaks and mods that are already available.

How's things with your car, have you got the wheel baring issue sorted yet?

Have got it via another method ;)

Nice one Nexus, you're a resourceful chap! Indeed it's the principle, plus the app was 59p yesterday and he's put it up since, possibly to take advantage of all those looking to get a GE device style set up. The money grabber

How's the wallpaper looking on that gorgeous SAMOLED screen of yours?

In the end, didn't even have to use that one since android police have put it up for free! bahahahaha :D There goes that guy's plan to make some money!

Absolutely lovely but it is maybe a bit too vibrant :p Think I still prefer the original phasebeam live wallpaper..... Will keep it on for the time being though :)
