Arcade Addiction

Are there even arcade games that you can't play on a console?

Pretty much every game in the arcade can be played at home "for free" IE they're not "pay to play".

In comfort, no need to go anywhere, same graphics as the arcade, possibly a bigger screen too.

To me its not about "why are arcades not popular anymore?" its "how are arcades still clinging on"?

I don't know anybody who goes out specifically to arcades, most of the time they are in seaside towns or places like shopping malls, bowling alleys, cinemas, places where people are out doing other things and just happen to spend a few quid in the arcade as they pass. Plus, the whole "I can do it in my house for free" kind of thing is a bit silly in my opinion. I can buy a crate of beer and drink that in my house for far cheaper than it would cost at the pub but that sort of defeats the point of the social aspect.

I remember some of my mates at school telling me how they would sell their soul for a Space Invaders machine.
This was back when they were first released in the late 70's but I still think about it from time to time and it always raises a smile :)

I'm the master of light gun games, my coordination is such that I belive I would be lethal with a actual firearm.

I defeated a boss in some game that was meant to take ages and be very tricky as he was a very small target...but I headshotted him. A single bullet.

I thought the same, used to play Time Crisis and the rest of them back in the day (I'm 29!) and I got to fire my first real set of guns 2 weeks back (M9 Handgun, M4 with red sight, REM 700 sniper rifle, M249 Saw) it's scary, honestly nothing like I thought it would be. What an experience.

Arcade wise, I used to spend all my pocket money on them! Thsoe were teh days :D

There's just not the same level of quality in the arcades any more. I see one even now and get excited, but it's just not the same :(

I wish they had smart phones like today so that I could have took a pic and uploaded it up on FB, twitter and share on forums.

Not specifically related to arcades but I saw a comment from Hugh Laurie recently that was something along the lines of "people these days seem to think if you don't snap something on your cellphone it never happened" and I do sometimes think there is a bit 'innocence lost' in terms off people recording or snapping everything interesting (or not) in their lives. At music gigs, you just see an army of people holding up their phones and cameras, and seemingly any time an exotic drink or meal is consumed it must be shared on facebook first.

Look at it this way, having your name on an arcade scoreboard means that a unique club of fellow local enthusiasts will have shared in it, have stared in wonderment at your achievement with genuine awe and interest. Whereas a share on modern social networks would simply drown in a sea of candy crush saga spam and likely be of little interest to 99% of recipients.
