Tokyo or New York

For me it would be Tokyo, different culture..

Whilst I get your sentiment - Japan is a radically different culture - your post implies that the US has the same culture as we do. Many people make this mistake, they think Americans are just like us only louder and more arrogant. This isn't really the case at all - it's another culture entirely that happens to share our language.

Even more reason to chose Tokyo then methinks..

1 week in Tokyo, and 1 week spent using the bullet train heading to the places west of Tokyo. It's what I did and it was an epic country to explore.

Have been to both and prefer Tokyo, but 2 weeks just there could be a bit much.

Of the times I've been I've not spent more than a week there.

I found no problem having 2 weeks in Tokyo, still had more to do but I did hang out more in the various areas. Want to go back even but I think this time will be 1 week in Tokyo and 1 week in somewhere like Osaka. Been to New York too and I must say I prefer Tokyo, I feel there is more to do there.

If you're literally only going to the city, do Tokyo.

Otherwise, head to New York for a little while, and also head north to see Boston, Vermont and Maine. Maine is incredible, my favourite place on earth.

Tokyo because Japan make the best jeans in the world, Iron Heart, Samurai, momentaro, flat head. And the only way to get them at any sort of good price if if you go to Japan, they are 210 pounds plus in the UK, but maybe 140 in Japan.

This is assuming money is no object, right? Tokyo is significantly more expensive than even New York in my experience.

its better than it was, yens at 150 now up from 120. also depends how silly you are with spending cash. if you think before you leap tokyo can be fairly reasonable.

and yeah i vote tokyo as its a nice place to let loose in and its great fun meeting people and trying to communicate with half a dozen languages badly. my last night there on the last trip i was in the middle of a conversation with japanese, chinese, taiwanese and german, was great fun especially after a few beers when everyone's language skills really got messed up :D

'Japan or East Coast USA - which would you chose' as a 14 day trip to either should really be a 4 day city trip and 10 days exploring wider afield.

This, 100%.

I've been to New York but not Tokyo. New York is nothing like a city in Europe and culturally it's very different. Fantastic, awe inspiring structures. Make sure you get to Madison Square if you are even remotely interested in basketball or ice hockey and go during the season.

New York wasn't that different from London tbh, apart from being taller and more humid.

Tokyo gets my vote (never been), though as other have said I would travel around a bit, Japan has lots on offer.

I went to new york but I got a bus to. Boston for a few days in the middle of my journey. Would recommend that. Bus was about $30. 2 weeks in one city is to long.

Remember and book brooklyn brewery tour :)

What would you recommend for 4 days? To a £1k gift off my boss for wedding gift and would like to put towards...
