Given that the tyres aren't treaded, what actually is the difference between left and right?
Sidewall construction isn't it? So the outer edge is designed to take a different level of energy than the inside edge. So when the tires get swapped and used on the wrong side of the car, the tyre gets loaded with energy in a way it isn't designed for and the tyre is more likely to 'fail'.

Well shows the teams should listen.
If the teams don't want to follow guidelines, then teams, drivers, FIA, media can't blame the supplier when it goes wrong.

Pirelli never explicitly told the teams not to swap tyres around. They also knew they were doing it. Last years tyres were left and right marked and the teams swapped them about.

Pirelli just never thought it would be an issue.

That's the thing.. How on earth is it? Surely you would think the left and right wheel tyre combo's are identical. Do they put more effort in to left tyre on a right turn bias track or something? :confused:

maybe the tyres aren't fully symetrical and the camber is a few degrees different when reversed ?
 
wasn't there something about mclaren putting the wheels on backwords by mistake as well which was faster for them but there was something about it making the car to low and it was under the clearance requirements.


which would suggest the tyres are very different when put on reversed

It was a suspension part they put on upside down in testing IIRC.

The new tyre construction is asymmetrical (apparently).

Can we just confirm, are the teams putting the left tyre on the right side of the car and vice versa, or are they mounting the tyres on their rims so that the outer edge of the tyre is on the inner rim and vice versa?

If they are putting the left wheel on the right axle, then the issue must be down to direction of rotation of the rubber laminate layers.
If they are mounting the tyres back to front but on the correct side of the car, then it would be down to incorrect loading of the side walls.
