I work in an office playing computer fixer, networky stuff, sysadminnig and hardware installerer. The usual clambering about under desks, lifting printers about, moving desktops etc, a pretty physical job.

Today at 4pm the HR dept fired out an email with a new dress code which included:-

Males must wear a shirt and tie, smart trousers and shoes.

I have no problem wearing a shirt, trousers and shoes I personally like looking smart, but wearing a tie is going to be a real ballache while I am carrying out most of the tasks mentioned above.

Does anyone know if there is any health and safety legislation which states there is a risk of injury ect, from wearing a tie while doing my job?

Cheers.

Tuck it into your shirt when performing any hazardous procedure, or clip it there permanently? Honestly, not a big deal.

Go clip on as suggested, and if they don't specify what sort of tie, go for the most eyewatering ones you can get.

Not that I can think of. Get a tie clip if you are genuinely fearful of some kind of printer related injury :p

I have a similar dress code and im under desks a lot fixing tat. I wear a skinny black tie (since it goes with pretty much everything) and just leave a cheeky top bottom undone. Doesn't get in my way.

Not really anything unless something does happen at which point it would have to be considered.

Just wear a clip on.

No chance. One of the lads tried the same thing at our place a few years ago. Nothing changed after the H&S review other than we all got issued with safety shoes. Doc Martens didn't go down well with the winkle-picker wearing metrosexuals on the Helpdesk! :D

Common sense applies really. If the lads are doing kit moves they clear wearing scruffs for the day with a manager.

Ughhh stupid stuck in the past dress codes, just don't wear it, in my former job as a prison officer I never once wore a tie despite it being a written in blood part of the dress regulations etc. in 9 years management would moan at me but in the end they gave up and did nothing about it

Have you seen the size of printers used in offices? You'd be lucky to lift one on your own at all.

Yip. I used to love weightlifting an Epson C4200DN. A piffling 38kg or so and a bloody awkward shape to boot.

There was an even heavier Lexmark A3 jobbie we had a few of. They were a 3 man lift.

I would say Polo shirt and trousers is about as formally dressy as you can be if you really are humping printers and routing cables all day.

However if you are more general desk side support I suggest you get down to TKMAXX for some pointy shoes and an offensive tie and quite moaning, lol!

why on earth anyone would insist on a tie for IT support - I doubt there are any serious health and safety concerns though but I could see why it would be annoying - if you're moving about all days, clambering under desks, going in and out of server rooms then you probably don't want your top buttons done up and a bit of cloth round your neck... rather you want them undone and perhaps sleeves rolled up... better still - trousers and a smart polo shirt.

tie seems pointless in that role - in fact an unnecessary bit of cloth around your neck which a violent prisoner could grab onto perhaps isn't ideal at all
