Advice before I buy i7 2600k

What if you get an i7 and it clocks worse the your i5?

Most sandy i7 will easy clock to 4.5ghz :)
Low GPU could also be driver related.....
And personally I run 7950's and my 2500k can blast them enough to never dip below 60fps so I use a few tweaks to up the eye candy and get my GPU's working

This was my first thought, been through drivers from 12.11 to 13.6

just my 2ps worth , I used to see 99% on both of my 6950s with a 2600k playing bf3, but lately its dropped down to 80% ish on both cards using the same cpu......im sure this is driver problem and not a cpu problem.......

Can you remember what driver you used to use where you had 99% usage?

Very nice scaling kaap, tomb raider seems to make good use of various sli configs. Bonus being that your able to show all 4 different setups, saves a bit of google searching.;)

+1

Drivers or lack of multi GPU support cause more hassle than anything else.

I downloaded COH 2 yesterday only to find out the publishers had disabled multi GPU support.:(

At the Moment My system cant even run BF3 on low settings and keep frame rate locked to 120fps
CPU usage is 90/99% all the time, only way I can drop the usage is to disable crossfire.

I cant mate.....im one of them that just uses the latest drivers when ever they are released and only monitor things when things tend to play up....

im using afterburner at the moment to monitor the temps in this heat wave......

it could have been 12.1

I think the only time you have to overclock an i7 to run a game is if you are dealing with very high fps. The easy way to deal with this is to disable or turn off one or more of the cards. If you are dealing with a game like BF3 with lower fps then the i7 will drive all the cards available with good usage.:)

Tough order getting a 2600k at that as they run much hotter with HT enabled.

This with my H80 on low fan speed also, if I put it up medium or high temps will drop off a lot.

My case is very well cooled even in this heat right now my system is at
CPU
63C
70c
65c
59c

GPU
62c
60c

It gets even cool in the night time ;) thats max temps btw

Dude... Go play Crysis, Skyrim,GTA4 and a few others on a stock i7 and you'll soon see just how much you will have to clock it.

Getting 60fps minimum on the first Crysis game is still out of reach for all but a very few CPU's.

Cod blops was one game where i did have to resort to turning off sli, (i7 920 and gtx 470's). It was a stuttering mess with it enabled, thankfully one card was plenty for it anyway.

IIRC Crysis the original game was a very badly written game. Crysis 3 @1600p totally maxed I have no trouble getting an average 80fps min 60fps and max 100fps. CPU @4.0ghz

Skyrim, I own it, I hate the game but again using a pair of GTX 690s they have no problem running it with the CPU @4.0ghz also I think I read somewhere that the max fps are limited so it does not matter what you do you are limited.

GTA4 I can not comment on as I don't own it, but if it contains excessive nudity, violence or sex please let me know and I will download it straight away.:D

Dude Crysis is not badly coded... I'm sick of people saying that when it couldn't be so farther from the truth

And yes GTA4 contains all of the above.

You're a bit touchy aren't you? But surely it was badly optimised when PC's 6 years later are struggling to run it with 60fps minimum? It was way ahead of its time though

GTA4 was a port though and runs like an absolute dog :s

Crysis is only dual threaded, that's its problem...... Started out a GPU limited game and over the years has become more and more CPU limited.

A 5Ghz 2500k or faster is needed for 60fps minimum in the built in benchmark but actually game play still dips below 50fps.

My 2500k @ 4.6ghz is happily keeping a pair of 780 gtx cards at %99 usage. I had lots of usage issues with crossfire 7950's and gave up in the end.
