Gareth Bale returns for Tottenham pre-season today and David Villa expecting to join him soon

Barcelona ace has agreed in principle to join Spurs – now Tottenham look to squeeze Catalan giants over fear Spain star will leave on free

Gareth Bale returns to Tottenham for pre-season training today (Monday) - and David Villa could follow as early as this week.

The Barcelona striker has reached an agreement in principle with Spurs and it is now down to the two clubs to agree a fee.

Tottenham’s offer to Barca, however, has not yet met the £8.6million asking price that the Spanish champions are demanding.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy believes he can drive the price down as Barca want to get Villa off the wage bill now that he has been deemed surplus to requirements.

Barca do not want to find themselves committed to paying Villa’s wages next season, around £110,000-a-week, when he would simply allowed to leave on a free when his contract expires next May.

Meanwhile Bale is among the first batch of players arriving on Monday for pre-season training.

The second batch, players that have been involved in internationals immediately after the season’s end, return next week.

Paulinho, given an extended rest after winning the Confederations Cup with Brazil, admitted after signing for Spurs on Saturday that he is looking forward to playing with the “big players” at White Hart Lane.

The £17million midfielder said: “In Brazil we watch a lot of Premier League matches. Spurs have some big players. i hope to work with them towards new successes. “

Bale’s arrival comes as Tottenham plan to unveil their new kit this week. Last week Real Madrid appeared to wave the white flag over plans to sign the four-time Footballer of the Year with Tottenham adamant that no amount of money will convince them to sell this summer.

Ironically, however, Spurs are keen on Madrid winger Jese Rodriguez who scored 22 goals for the club’s B team last season.

Jese went on to become one of the stars of this summer’s Under-20 World Cup and has a year left on his contract.

With 12 months left on his contract, he has hinted he is ready to quit the Bernebeu in search of first-team action.

He said: “I want to play, and I don’t know if I’ll get many minutes in the Real Madrid first team.

“I don’t know what the club wants with me. I assume they will want to offer me a renewal but I don’t know what I will do. I’m not going to lie about it.”

Everything about Arsenal upsets DM. Even if we sacked Wenger and made Eboue the new manager he would still complain :D

:D:D, seems like there was some truth in Arsenal looking at Suarez in the end. God knows whats going on with Arsenal, so far we have signed some unknown 20 yr old who seems to be injury hit a lot of the time.

All gone icy cold on the Higuain saga, last i heard we offered £23.1mill whereas Real want £25mill or something. If it is true that we are haggling over a few mill then seriously i dont know what the hell it is going to take for Arsenal to get it through their thick skulls that we seriously cannot get world class players for peanuts. But this is typical Wenger and Arsenal, buy cheap and get crap in...its been like this for quite a few yrs now. Starting to think that this Higuain transfer is nothing more than a flash in the pan and again we wont be signing any decent players :/

Arsenal are doing just enough not to sign anyone. Placing bids for players they will never sign and dragging their heels on those they can. Shaping up to be another classic arsenal transfer window. I was really hoping Arsenal would sign a few quality players and compete for the title next year but I'm not convinced that is going to happen.

Mirror saying that arsenal 'enquired' about Suarez, but were told to politely **** off. Weird one, he isn't a Wenger style signing by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe it is fun and games from Real.

It wouldn't shock me to see Brendan Rodgers move for him. He'd be a useful player to have at the club and he's obviously worked with him before.

I hope he has learnt his leasson with players that he has worked with before, Sinclair is no where near what we need, we also seem to be well stocked in that dept.

Luis Suarez's odds to leave Liverpool have shortened from 4/11 to 1/3 following reports Arsenal have had a £30million bid rejected.

Various sources on Monday morning suggest the Gunners have turned their sights to the Uruguayan striker after their move for Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain failed to materialise.

Madrid remain Sky Bet's 11/8 favourites to sign Suarez, who has signalled his intent to leave the English game, while Arsenal are available at 5/1 to complete the deal in the current transfer window.

Sky Bet football trader Chris Spicer said: "We're keeping a close eye on Suarez's market due to today's reports, but the influx of bets we've been braced for is yet to take off somewhat.

"We've seen a little money on Arsenal this morning, but not enough to move from 5/1, though we have shortened his price to leave Liverpool as it appears Arsenal are genuine contenders."

Just had a read of the Sun at my local sandwich place where i get my lunch from and from what the Sun is saying is that Higuain still has 3 yrs left on his Real contract and theres a real fear that Ancelotti wants to keep him as he still sees him as part of his plans at Real.

Think they are meant to sit down later this week to see what happens but if Higuain wants to leave then he will be allowed to leave. So its really down to Higuain in the end and if Ancelotti can convince him to stay then he wont be moving to Arsenal.

If it is true then doesnt bode well for Arsenal this summer, seeing as we have made enquiries for both Rooney and Suarez but have been told that they arent for sale. Wonder who Wenger has his eye on next if the Higuain deal doesnt go through because if we dont make any major signings this summer, i dont think we will get CL football next season tbqh seeing as Spurs are starting to strengthen their side slowly but surely.

what actually happened with higuain? last week a couple of arsenal supporting friends of mine said it was a done 4 yr deal. they were pleased it was 4 yrs as they thought it was only 3. turns out it's a 0 yr deal :D

Pretty clear Higuain transfer isn't happening if Arsenal bid that for Suarez

What I don't understand is that Arsenal apparently did not want to pay £25 Million for Higuain but then bid for Suarez who realistically is going to easily cost £30+ Million. It seems as though Arsenal just want to show that they are bidding for big name players to appease the fans and do not really want to buy them.

Its just a PR stunt guys. Arsenal flexing showing they have the cash, Liverpool showing they don't want to sell Suarez.

How much are Liverpool willing to let him go for? At the moment I would take £40 Million for him, very good player but not worth the hassle.

We don't have to sell and the reported price is 70+. so, 60 million. He isn't going to Arsenal, or Chelsea, or Man City he is only interested in going to RM (all his press conferences have mentioned them alone).

Thats exactly it, from the media it seems like Arsenal dont want to pay Real £25mill for Higuain but yet made a £30mill bid for Suarez:confused:...quite mind boggling if true and its making a mockery of Arsenal fans as its evident to see that Wenger/Arsenal just dont have a clue in the transfer market.

Wish David Dein would come back and sort these transfers out, when he was at Arsenal we made good signings...since he has left we have signed utter crap like Squillaci and Santos to name but a few.

Looking more and more likely that this summer is going to be a long tough one for Arsenal in the transfer market. Hopefully we still have over a month or so to get some signings in but means the longer we leave it the less chance of these players getting time to gel with the rest of the squad during pre-season.

Higuain, Rooney, Suarez, all doomed to failure.

Posturing and nothing more?

Those saying it's strange that they've gone for Suarez because they didn't want to pay more for Higuain - Suarez is worth a lot more. Just because you want fair market value for a player doesn't mean you don't have the cash.

The Arsenal bid for Suarez is very, very, very strange. It seems to be 'real' - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23222924

Arsenal are potentially a good step up from Liverpool but why would they even bid for a player who is, well... Suarez, and his main reason for leaving Liverpool seems to be his dislike of the English press - which is just retarded in itself as he brought everything on himself and can't blame them.

He's an idiot and there's no way Arsenal would seriously want to buy him, so you have to suspect Real Madrid may have something to do with it, perhaps.

I still think they'll get Higuain, the only other club interested (it seems) have got Tevez now, so unless he stays he's probably Arsenal bound.
