Non traditional board games

Played Dominion tonight 2 players really enjoyed it.

Great game, isn't it?

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Star Trek: Attack Wing from Wizzkids. Space battles with ships from the Star Trek universe. Uses a modified (and licensed) version of Fantasy Flight's flight path system, as used in X-Wing.

Yea really liked it, hopefully get to play again this weekend with 3 players.

Just my take

  • Fluxx is an amazingly good party game, especially with the lads and a few drinks
  • Once Upon a Time is good with family and creative people
  • Settlers of Catan for different yet more of a traditional board game
  • Forbidden Island is a good laugh and quite quick
  • Pandemic is a more complicated version of Forbidden Island and like Forbidden Island gets incredibly hard when you add more players.

Played Star Trek: Fleet Captains today along with the Romulan expansion. Works for 2/3 and 4/6 players, 2 and three players with one person taking one faction each, and 4/6 players where you split the ships between two people. Its a clix game with lots of ships!

Seemed pretty fun, probably moreso when you're playing with just the 2/3 people since you have a better idea of what you want to do rather than trying to communicate with your teammate who's on the opposite side of the board, making sure they are trying to work towards the same goals that you are. Then again, that could add to the fun as you have two captains of smaller fleets and communication is key!

I'd like to play that but nobody I know owns a copy and I'm not willing to fork out the £80 it costs for the base game.

I'll spend the money on Attack Wing. If its anything like X-Wing then I'll spend too much money. When the wife asked how much my X-Wing miniatures costs she was shocked. Not angry thoug, she knows its one of my main hobbies.

Picked up Descent 2nd Edition & Summoner Wars last week. My other half (she like boardgames and the odd bit of tabletop) wanted somethng with a bit of plot to it and bit of leveling up so it was a choice between that or Mice and Mystics and she pciked (and purchased) Descent.

Only had a chance to play 3 campaign quests of Dscent, but very much enjoying, especially the quick easy setup after coming from Mansions of Maddness and Earth Reborn which both can take 30 minutes.

Tempted by Descent at some point myself, though I think the next one on my list will be Mythic Battles.

Seriously loving Summoner Wars, but need more people to play it with as the wife is sick of being beaten at it. :D

I love Star Trek and the game dymanic is pretty nice, but I dilike the concept of HeroClix. It's just fiddly.

Mythic Battles loogs interesting on BGG, will have to read through a bit more.

The whole of Descent just feels like a well rounded quality product, it's been streamlined enough from the original to keep the speed up to a nice pace while still giving lots of throught. Plus having quests split up into 2 encounters gives a nice interlude if you just want a 45 minute game. It's also good that the encounters aren't just a straight kill the enemy, keeps the game varied.

Looking forward to trying Summoner Wars over the weekend. We wanted a 30 to 45 minute game with more interaction than Dominion (that we also own), but didn't really want to do much deck building or somethign too collectable and this seemed to fit the bill.

Absolutely; it's perfect for that. Flip the board out, "I'll have that army", "I'll have that one". Set up, and off you go. Thirty minutes' play time, easy.

Mythic Battles looks kinda like Summoner Wars "to the next level" to me, which is very appealing.

Might actually get Tannhauser on the table this weekend -- finally! -- to see how we get on with it.

Awesome, Castle Panic with the current trend of making everything zombie-based :)

It looks to be much more than that -- far more rules and special actions for the attacking zombies, a different mechanic for fighting back, a different goal and method of reaching it (survivors appearing out of the forest with gear), and players actually move their own pawns inside the cabin throughout -- eventually having to leg it to safety in the end.

Looking forward to this! :)

Yeah, a proper look confirmed that - I did think that Castle Panic didn't have much strategy involved, this seems to fix that and introduce new mechanics to the core game :)

It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I do quite enjoy Epic Spell Wars Of The Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre.

Its a simple game, but good fun if you're with a group of people who don't take their gaming too seriously and like to joke around with things. The game is 2-6 players, each person is a wizard and you are all fighting to become the last wizard standing. At the base of Mt. Skullzfyre.

Each player has a hand of 8 cards and 20 health, all together you look through your hand and create a spell made of 1-3 cards. Each spell can have a source, a quality and a delivery. Smaller spells are faster to cast but less powerful, so generally you will want to use all 3 cards. Once everyone has picked, you all reveal at the same time. The delivery of the spell has an initiative which is how long it takes to cast that spell, so the fastest spell goes first, and so on. Resolving the spells is simple, just do what it says on each card. Also, you have to say the name of the spell as you cast it, in a deep wizardy tone!

And you make spells like:

On the delivery where you need to roll a die (And some source and qualities as well) the number of dice you roll is determined by the number of components which match the same element as that card (Such as arcane, death, primal etc).

The game is hectic fun, you can't control who you target because it is down to the cards. And while you can have a rough idea who the strongest foe is when you pick the cards to play, if you have a low initiative and lots of other spells resolve before you, its likely that there will be a different strongest foe when you do cast.

As I said, its not for people looking for a serious game, its more a silly filler game, there isn't tons of strategy, the only question is usually if you want to cut a card from your spell for the initiative, but even then it isn't a huge choice, but with 8 cards you can make some interesting spells, and there are some that let you chain off ridiculous combos too.
