*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

Was browsing the PSN store earlier and noticed that Assasins Creed 4 and Watchdogs have been priced for ps3 preorder. Bargains at only £59.99 and £55.99 respectively

I genuinely don't understand that, why are the digital prices so high? Or am i being a complete moron and missing something?

If you wanted to go completely digital with the PS4 is 500GB enough storage do you think?
I'd imagine the games are going to be bigger than the previous generation.

What sort of size were the biggest games on the PS3?
For me until there's and an system similar to Steam with regards to sales im going to stick with physical copies.
I'm also a bit of a geek in that i like to have my game on show aswell.:o

well for now the prices could be place holder's until the ps4 has shipped i wouldnt bet on anything yet. if they keep them at that price then just buy hard copies from stores.

sure its handy if you can download them if your away or something but honestly if sony want to over charge for them il just buy from stores and be happy saving money.

digital copy should be at least 10-20% cheaper, because you can't sell it forward.....normal copy you can.

If you run a ps4 at 720 rather than 1080 would you get more fps like you would on a PC?

Probably not, although FPS dips might be less noticeable.

Those prices mentioned above are for the PS3 versions, so the PS4 versions will no-doubt be the same (or more expensive) anyway.

it's not even that reason, It's cheaper for the publisher to slap it on digital. They don't have to press the disc, spend money on the case, ship it etc. Digital should always be cheaper really. It very rarely is though!

How many people are actually thinking of building a digital library on PS4? Rather than buying disc, buying everything from the store?

If they're cheaper than the disc based version then I'll buy a few games. The games that I'll be spending a lot of time on MP. If they aren't a cheaper then no. And by cheaper I mean at least £10 cheaper than retail.

Pretty sure it's down to retailers kicking up a fuss if publishers put games on sale cheaper than retail.
Really publishers should say "look,we're allowing you to sell on used games the same as before so you'll still ridiculous amounts of money from them and we'll get nothing back. As a result we're going to sell digital games cheaper than disc based" Or something like that.
Retailers needs publishers just as much as publishers need retailers.

I think you're right.

I believe the prices will eventually become lower than high street rrp prices.

The thing people forget is that with a physical copy, there's an intrinsic value attached to each disc. E.g. a store chain agrees to buy, say, 500,000 copies. They can negotiate a good price on that agreement because the publisher/distributor wants to sell those copies. The retailer can then offer a lower price to the customer as a result. The cost will go down in the weeks/months after release because there'll still be thousands of copies left unsold which the retailer needs to clear (or the publisher/distributor will sell to the retailers at a lower rate to help clear). Stock sat on shelves or in a warehouse is a liability; it can get lost/damaged, and it loses value.

None of that applies to downloads, so the motivation to offer discounted games simply isn't there. Plus as touched on already, retailers don't really like it when they're undercut (or removed entirely) by the company they're selling the games for. The PSP Go wasn't supported by a lot of retailers for that very reason; there's no money for them in hardware and even on games, the profit is nothing special.

I think people have this idea that if consoles go download-only we'll all end up in a Steam-like situation where games are dirt cheap. The reality is that unless there's a sale on, Steam isn't actually particularly cheap (in fact, quite the opposite), the only saving grace is their sales (which are seemingly becoming worse by the year) and that you can buy games elsewhere and activate them on Steam.

That's exactly why I don't want digital only. Before that happens publishers have to show us that it's good for us by making sure digital games are cheaper than retail. Until that happens then physical copies won't go away.

Totally agree, I dont understand the logic of people that think going digital means cheaper gaming, when in reality looking at the existing console digital platforms its anything but.

Once publishers/platform holders prove that digital media can be as competitive through the games life cycle (Im not even asking it to be cheaper, just to match movement that we see with physical media) then more will naturally buy digital over physical due to factore like convenience, forcing that as weve seen just wont work or even expecting us to trust their vision is going to fall on deaf ears now...

You say that but digital downloads of both music and movies appear to be very popular.

Hmm perhaps. The only digital I have ever bought has been games on Steam or DLC on XBL. I also sub to PS+. But yeah iTunes etc are hugely popular though personally I've never bought music this way.
