'4770k + Z87' v 'Ivy Bridge-E + X79' for mega gaming build

Allo.

Come pay day I'll be ready to build a new (vanity) gaming system. Budget will be very hefty, and I'll be looking for the system to last a good few years - meaning top quality components.

However, like a few others I'm torn between going 4770k + Z87, or waiting for Ivy Bridge-E + X79.

I could likely afford the crazily priced 4960X if I wait the extra 6 weeks or so for IBE, but I'm not sure spending the money on that is the greatest idea, especially with an "old" chipset.

I'm a pretty hardcore gamer, and the pc does get used as a HTPC as well.

Would any of you knowledgeable people be able to give me some pros/cons of each?

e.g. going for 4770k means I can go for SLI Titans ;-) or 4690X means my systems will last 5 years.

Ta.

I think 4770k with sli titan is an overkill, wont the cpu bottleneck?

4690x maybe 2 years b4 Skylake (PCIe 4.0, SATA Express, and DDR4) comes out and are you the type of person that "must have new tech"?

4770k should handle two titans easily, 4670k may hit a thread bottleneck.

Ivy-e will be on the existing x79 chipset, as with sandy-e you'd be better off financially looking at the 4930k over the 4960x. Both are hex core both are unlocked.

X79 may be near 2 years old when ivy-e lands, but offers just about everything z87 does and more, quad channel memory and every board will manage at least 16/16x in dual card setups and even more with more cards.

From a future proof pov I'd go with the hex cores

Nope - this isn't a bang for buck build...

The 4930k and 4960X will probably have similar performance when overclocked in the same way the 3930k, 3960X and 3970X (I use all three) all have similar performance.

If you really want to go for it grab these

And anything up to 4 of these

plus an IB-E hex core CPU when they launch

That's a familiar looking set up :D

And 1 of these to house it :)

i think we need an actual budget to build this too :)

I've got a decent idea of the rest of the build - I'm going to create a separate thread once I've decided on the CPU & chipset.

The budget is likely to be between 3 - 3.5k. The issue will be that waiting for IBE will be hard!

As an owner of a 3570k could someone give an an answer of how a 4670k would hit a thread bottleneck over a 4770K??? They are both 4 cores 4 threads unless the application supports Hyperthreading.

Apart from BF3 and Benchmarks what supports Hyperthreading? Well as far as i know nothing does.A little extra cache is all you get from a 4770k for more money. And considering that future games will be using AMD x64 and HT will not feature on the PS4 i would have thought i5 is just as good as i7 for gaming even under dual Titans.I would bet the Framerates will be indentical as they are now with 4770k v 4670k.
