Where did you get yours done?

My start time is 07:46.
Which I think I'm kind of glad of, because the time you would have to be there for the earlier starts must be crazy.

Had mine done at Sigma Sports in Hampton Wick.

I'm currently looking for somewhere to stay the night before the ride. A mate has said I can stay at theirs in Islington which will be fairly easy. I've got loads of mates in Blackheath and Greenwich, but crossing the river at that time of the morning ain't easy. Mine is 30 miles to QEOP so I don't fancy leaving at 5am to get there for my 06:38 loading slot.

Hmm, just looking at some stuff at Myprotein. Could pick up some fructose, maltodextrin, caffeine and electrolytes and make up my own energy drink mix for a fair bit less than buying tubs of High5 mix or whatever, particularly if I buy in bulk.

Tempting...

Aye thats what I do.

Not all rims have indicators though? Or is this not the case. How do you tell rim wear on rims without indicators?

Correct, not all rims have wear indicators.
If you take the tyre off and place a straight-edge against the braking surface you should be able to tell how worn it is. If it's concave more than 1mm or so, you need a new rim.

Lovely, cheers, I'll get the steel ruler out when I get home.

Ahhh cool. Well I think I know what the result will be. But ill have a look when I get home.

Think I'm going to get one done then, just looking at reviews of different places.

I live in the Islington area myself.
The only annoying thing is that with the road closures, its not entirely clear what route you can take to get into the Olympic Park.

Your not supposed to adjust the angle of the brake pad holder thingy magigy are you?
When it has been set up right, you shouldnt need to change the angle.
When it has been set up by somebody who doesnt know what they are doing, you may need to tweak it.

Should I be able to get it perfect and rub free just by altering the cable and playing with the big round wheel that moves the caliper in and out ?
The lever that moves the caliper in and out is only there to give you room to remove the wheel. It's not for adjusting the pads when riding.
There is an allen key hole on the top of the caliper to adjust the centering of it. When you have it centered, you can then adjust the cable tension to make sure the pads dont rub (no, pads shouldnt rub when you're riding). You can do this by either making small adjustments with the barrel adjusters or larger adjustments by unbolting the cable from the caliper to take out some slack or loosen it off a little.

Hi everyone

I want to start cycling properly again, but I've been out of it for a long while. I'll be starting on my mountain bike, looking at getting a road bike once I get back into the swing of things. Today I ordered a Cateye Strada so I can track my progress, but I was wondering whether there were any apps on the iPhone that I should get to go along with it? I see that some here have linked to Strada and Endomondo, which app should I look at getting for tracking progress? For me a big part of taking something seriously is seeing the improvement that it brings, so an app that tracks progress would be brilliant for me :)

it doesn't matter whether you use endomondo or strava both of them let you export the GPX files of the ride and both of them let you import GPX files.

so you can sign up on both websites try out both programs and just export/import the gpx files so you have stats on both and see which one you like using best.

then when the time comes to choose it's not like you have lost any miles by trying them both out

You can only download a GPX from Strava if you're a premium member.

EDIT: I tell a lie, you can only download someone else' GPX if you're a premium member.

Have a go at uploading it to this site. It's pretty good at fixing broken garmin files.

Actually found that last night and used it.

While it made the file useable, the GPS data only had me doing about 2 miles!

I've had my Edge 800 pretty much since it launched and its the first time I've ever had it happen.

its stupid just how over priced garmins are.. 300 quid for a thing that hardly does more than a cheap smartphone? wish a smartphone had the battery life of garmin tho.. the only advantage.

the only advantage.
Not really...

-ANT+ connectivity
-weatherproof
-Easier to mount on a bike
-easier to control with gloves on
-easier to see in sunlight
-less likely to break if you crash or drop it
-temperature sensor
-barometric altitude sensor
