Made a booboo during reinstallation - lost my GTA4 save!

Oh woe, woe is me.

Well not really, but a minor annoyance more than anything. I recently reinstalled Windows as I changed out my mobo, and totally forgot to back up my in progress GTA4 save. Why it can't save it in the game directory, or My Documents like every other game I dunno but hey.

So I blew the W7 partition away from the Windows installer and recreated it when I installed, only after doing all the driver updates and all that sort of stuff did I realise what I'd done.

The drive is a Sammy 830 SSD, and I've run the usual dirge of freeware data recovery tools but it's only showing stuff from my current installation. I'm guessing I've lost it for good unless you good folk have any ideas?

Cheers in advance!

I wish, it's my 2nd play through (first on PC) and I've just unlocked the last island so pretty far through. Had got loads of jumps and all sorts of stuff. :(

Anyway, you're right I should have backed up the disk or just gone with my gut and used it as an excuse to upgrade the boot SSD at the same time then I would have had the disk to pull it back off of. :D

Whenever I upgrade, or just do a "sping clean" on my PC, I always make backups.

Whenever I upgrade, or just do a "spring clean" on customer's PCs or laptops, I always make backups.

The best thing ever is something like Easeus Todo Backup Free, or Macrium Reflect. Make an image of your drive, then you can do whatever you like. You have a huge "safety net".

Thing is Dervious, with something like GTA I'd need to be doing daily backups and as retentive as I am about that sort of stuff at work I just can't justify doing it at home. The PC is solely used for gaming, it's not on 24/7 like the Mac which TimeMachine takes care of. Lesson learned for next time though, check EVERYWHERE before doing a reinstall.

Wazza - thought had cross my mind... might have a look and see if there's something close to where I was.

You don't really need to be doing daily backups of your game saves, as the chances of a random loss of data are fairly slim. You do need to backup your data (game saves, or whatever) if you are doing a reinstall.

Well I have found a saved game at the point I was in the story, but thanks to GFWL you have to hack about to get it to work.

Can't be miffed. :(

Done this a few times myself :( Being a bit anal with backing up savegames now, I use a piece of freeware called Dsynchronize to enable real time syncing of save games to my Google drive folder, which then wafts it onto the cloud :p I also use Clonezilla server on an old P4 box I have to image both my PC and laptops on a regular basis, over PXE

Dsynchronize isn't as user friendly as some of the more mainstream tools, and you need to be careful with the filters you use otherwise it'll try and copy everything in the source folder to the target (some games use the AppData folder for more than saves, for example)
