Food supply for a month £30?

Heres an interesting (but unlikely option)

If you have a back garden you could get some quail.
I only have 4 at the momentand their food doesnt cost much

I have them because i love birds but also i get breakfast that cost pence per meal

financial
20kg of quail food 10-15£
food per day per quail = 0.02kg
20kg of quail food will last 1000 days for one quail
for my 4 quail this will last 250 days or at worst 200 days

each quail can lay 250 ish eggs per year

so about 1000 eggs for 10-15kg food

id say it takes 4 eggs to make a small sandwich

I like this option because it opens up possibilities. You could in theory breed your quails. More quails = more eggs . You could also eat them as and when. Eventually you could end up as the Bernard Mathews of the quail world. It's a true rags to riches story. :p

Billions of people around the world manage it.

Not gonna be fun though.

Food bank for augmentation would certainly be the best plan if you don't want to be malnourished after a month.

Why are people suggesting things like chicken and mince? Even the cheapest cuts of chicken, e.g. wings, drumsticks or even whole chickens etc, are still ~£1 for a meal's worth. A can of beans will cost you 20-30p for a meal's worth.

Actually, M&S do large chicken leg/thighs 3 packs of 4 for £10 (12 legs/thighs). We use one per person and add that to some cous cous or rice and a bit of frozen veg that would do a meal for a quid.

I think the OP would be better off with protein and grain, drink plenty of water before you eat (say a pint of tap water) as that will fill you up.

If you absolutely have to stick to that kind of budget then it will be possible if you really have to.

Things like porridge (made with water) is very filling and if you bought some jam, fruit or honey you could add to that for variety. I used to eat porridge for breakfast and lunch for a year or so when I was saving for my house - boring but cheap!

Eww

DO NOT buy this recipe book whatever you do! I made the unfortunate MISTAKE of buying it to make Christmas dinner a little more interesting for the family this year. I earnestly followed the recipes and was very excited to offer the star recipe `Spunkulicious Pie' to the in-laws as a special treat. All of the men in my immediate family contributed to it. Even Granddad! We didn't even know he had it in him. The shared solidarity of a collective experience made it seem even more special. It had that delicate smell of ball sack aroma when it came out of the oven just like the book said BUT! A few hours later everybody became violently ill. The book says you can reheat the pie but now I read somewhere else that this is disastrous because the heat mutates the semen. We all spent Christmas day at the NHS walk in centre and were diagnosed with the rare illness known as CONSPUNCTIVITIS. It ruined our whole Christmas and I want my money back!!!!
I gave it 2 stars because it smelt nice and the men felt happy at first.

I'm suprised no one has suggested that you try and go to a friends house for dinner as often as possible? Maybe raid their kitchen when they aren't looking, or ask if they have anything that they are about to throw out?

So ~82p for chicken, vs ~20p for a can of beans for a similar quantity of protein?

You misunderstand that protein =! protein. Just because beans might say 6g protein, and chicken might say 30g protein, doesn't mean if you eat 5 lots of beans means you will get the equivalent protein from either. That is vegan logic and it is incorrect.

- use sites like http://www.magicfreebiesuk.co.uk/free-stuff/c/food-and-drink/p/1/
- get stock cubes to add flavour to meals (15p for pk 10 tesco value)
- go to supermarkets when they're pricing stuff down
- bulk buy wherever possible

personally I'd just go into the red by an extra tenner a week or so to make it easier, £50 of debt wont break the bank if its short term. If it's long term then, well, good luck to you.

Big bag of red lentils, big bag of spuds, big bag of curry powder, onions, garlic & cheapo veg oil.

Potato & lentil curry :)

-used to live off the stuff when i was on the dole...

So ~82p for chicken, vs ~20p for a can of beans for a similar quantity of protein?

I think chicken is a bit more versatile, plus you can use the bones for stock and if you padded it out with something else then any leftover chicken could be used for sandwich filling etc.

Beans every day - sounds like I'm a celebrity!

My local tesco start putting out all the reduced things on a friday night between half 8 and 9pm, theirs some real bargains, big joints of meat that go off that day for £0.80p when they should be £10! but be quick as their is always 3-4 other regular bargain hunters hanging around for the guy to bring the stuff, if you can try and get friendly with the staff that work their, i got friendly with the guy on the fish counter and now if he see's me he always gets me stupidly cheap reduced meat as he knows im a body builder and eat a lot!

Crap it has to come to this.

Top tip if you really stuck:

Hang outside a metro supermarket in town and ask a passerby if they can buy you a loaf. 5/10 people will buy you one.

When I stayed in town and someone ask me to buy them food i always would - never gave them money but if they asked for food i would.
