Careers with Apple retail

Maybe if they were doing 60+ hours a week.

When I worked on the technical support, we had loads of guys (apple nuts) leave the technical support and go to the store which has just opened. We had a trainer come supervisor who was on about £17-18k, he had to take a pay cut and was actually one of the higher up "Genius". He's had training in Cork, and knows pretty much everything when it comes to Apple products...

Whereas the rest went into the retail and sales side of things, and they got slightly more, as we were only on £10k on the tech support!!!
Sorry, I was talking about retail - didn't realise we were talking about support.

I do believe that to become an Apple Genius you need to have at least a first in a non Mickey Mouse degree.

It's retail, retail sucks.

I went through some of the Apple certified sales training when I worked in retail (not for Apple) and it was just ridiculous. I imagine it's quite similar to what being indoctrinated into a cult feels like.

Working at an Apple store isn't a way to climb the ladder or a stepping stone to building a career at Apple, it's a way to build a career in retail.

'Career' and 'Retail'.

A combination rarely said without smirking.

e : I worked in retail for 6 years and almost became a Sainsburys Store Manager before realising I could make more money selling jam on the Underground which would have had better perks too (like eating jam).

I never looked at PCW as a career, it was a part time student job. Ended up working there full-time for about a year while looking for a proper job as it was better than being unemployed. I'd never have seen it as a career, the managers that did (either promoted within the company or graduate scheme people) were with a couple of exceptions complete muppets.

It wasn't the waste of time most people would assume given the store name. The customer service experience was invaluable and the technical experience opened a few doors that a degree on it's own wouldn't.

*Feel free to rubbish the place. Some PCW stores in the mid-late 90s were very good, not the typical DSG retail store.

Thats a high end Jam store your running in the underground if you can match the wage the store manager is on!

This. I thought store managers (with bonuses) at supermarkets were usually on 6 figure salaries or very much near that? I know the rest are paid peanuts though.

Wasn't there a guy on here who used to be one? Started the bodybuilding thread in the Sports section I think.

I was on £17k as a sales assistant and went up the £20650 when I joined the Creative team which is the same level and wage as the Genius team. You get a pay rise every year mostly as well unless you're not pulling your weight.

I did hear rumblings that they've lowered the wage for new starters since. When I was on the sales floor I was on more than most as I had more experience than most.

I wouldn't go to work there again but it's not a bad job if its your thing. It's very social or at least it was at my store, there was always stuff going on outside of work and the money is good for retail.

it's probably based on the difference between their tech level and their average user :p

lol Yea

What annoys me is that i once went for a job at an apple store to work out the back (repairs). I was not asked in for an interview yet a mate who had 1 years retail experience in a game shop got the job.

Difference between me and him... He had GCSE's only for qualifications and a years Retail experience.
I had a GNVQ in IT, BTEC in IT and was in middle of a Robotics Degree not to mention running my own Phone repair business.

Yet they hired him... LOL

I imagine it's as soul destroying as every other retail job where you're dealing with customers who will tolerate you at best and actively dislike you at worst.

I worked in retail for years - pretty much from the day I finished school until the day I left University. It was far from soul destroying, infact I thoroughly enjoyed it despite the obvious issues with customers etc.

But it isn't really a career. Even management in retail is very poorly paid depending on the sector - your average high street store will, depending on location, often be paying a store manager under £20k.

It's a decent career at the right level in the right company - the store manager of a large Tesco for example is paid well - but people in those jobs did not generally start at the bottom and work up, they parachuted in on a graduate scheme or stepped sideways from another position anyway.
