Careers with Apple retail

lol, magnolia is on fire in this thread :D

I think everyone should work in retail at least once, if only to make you a better, more tolerant person. It's dire.

I'd PREFER to work in the corporate sector in development, but I doubt there's anything UK based for that :(

You should probably pursue this then... does it have to be apple? There are other development roles out there working on apple products which aren't within apple itself - if you want to work in development then surely that is a better place to start than working in a shop.

Its like some aspiring actor wanting to work in the west end and deciding to get a job selling tickets in the box office - I don't think that sort of choice would make anyone happy long term.

If anything it's done the opposite for me. I used to be layed back - now the thought of interaction with the general pubic makes me rage, jump about and swing on my tyre swing

E: and throw poo

'Career' and 'Retail'.

A combination rarely said without smirking.

e : I worked in retail for 6 years and almost became a Sainsburys Store Manager before realising I could make more money selling jam on the Underground which would have had better perks too (like eating jam).

Agreed. Another ex-retail manager here, and I can confirm it is absolute crap. I now sit on my bum while business clients ring up in droves to hand over copious amounts of money, I get paid much more, and I don't have to deal with idiots shouting at me about how their laptop battery doesn't last for the 10hrs it was advertised to, despite lengthy explanations about load and battery life.

Electronics retail is particularly bad because people don't understand the products they're buying that well, which sets them up for disappointment.

not to mention running my own Phone repair business.

Well there's a conflict of interest there, that's probably why you didn't get it. They don't want people studying for degrees, and running a side business, and trying to work at the Apple store.

Nop, I'd much rather work for Google or MS - Google especially, everything about working there looks amazing :D

They very rarely hire directly into a Genius role and generally will promote to Genius from within the store after you have had a year or more experience and show that you have the "Apple Stuff" to be a GENIUS...lol

I talk from limited experience as I went through their recruitment process back in 2011....they talk a great deal about the fact it is harder to get a job in Apple than it is to get into Stanford...I was offered the job but declined.

Looks good from the outside but working for Google isn't a job it's a lifestyle choice from what I can gather which is why they have all the cool stuff, to keep you in the office working.

Apply for the job, ask them the wage if you get an interview. If you don't get an interview, the wage doesn't matter a jot. Sorted

They equate one of the finest teaching institutions in the world with some crummy under paid and over-titled retail role with a company with both a short and rather chequered history and expect this to be a positive?

This is either the funniest or most tragic thing I've read today :D

I'm not really sure how they can even justify that! XD

My place is kinda like that. Part of agency life is having the coolest working environments and newest/biggest/shiniest macs to play with - but with that comes the expectations of ending your working day at 7-8+ o'clock, not 5 and travelling on demand. Despite being big on my career, I'd rather it didn't dominate my life.

I don't have any of the perks or a good wage, I start at 8.30 and finish OFFICIALLY at 5.30, don't normally get out till 6.30 and then my work mobile continues to ring and receive emails till 9ish :(

Why don't you do something else then? Limiting yourself to only Apple seems a little short-sighted given your terrible salary and requirement to be on call for a job you don't like.

Also, did I miss something? Were you someone else before?

I don't want to limit myself, but at the moment distance etc etc is essential, I work just down the road from where I live - I can't afford to drive on my current salary so it gets tricky!

And what on earth do you mean? :P
