What is life all about?

Whatever the OP predicament. I am happy for him. I can only dream of being where he is. Without the worry and stress that I carry each day. I am in my early 40's and lately things have been pretty bad and I hope to one day see a light at the end of the tunnel to bring a smile to my face which has been missing a long time.

I hope the OP has the smile to carry around.

Enjoy life. We get only one. Do whatever you feel is right.

To summarise what pestilence is saying:

It's like walking into a hospital ward of quadruple amputees and saying "Sometimes I get bored of working 9 to 5, there comes a point when you just want to pack it in and play twister all day".

mate, from the sounds of things you've just done it right, but were expecting more. most people just expect more so give yourself a pat on the back and get back to doing whatever is it you want to do

I really shouldn't, but.. :D

Naughty Skyfall.

You're putting yourself in the firing line by virtue of your flippant attitude to just deciding to "enjoy life".

Of course every single one of us would like to take stock, turn around and focus on making ourselves happy. The reality is that 99% of your general working stiffs will never be able to retire early, and a sizable chunk of that percentage will drop dead at working age before ever getting to withdraw a penny of whatever trifling amount the government has left for them anyway. Why? Because we all have bills to pay and families to feed.

You're in the enviable position of being young enough, and having enough money behind you, to cash out and "win". Most people don't, and when you make a thread like this it's just rubbing what is already a point of resentment in the faces of everyone who knows, deep down, that they'll never get the opportunity to enjoy themselves before they're just too mentally and physically wrecked to do so. Hell, if things keep going the way they are, in the future retirement day will be like wheeling a coma patient in an iron lung out into an adventure playground. No ******* use whatsoever. We'll probably just go straight from the workplace to a hospice, then fed into the Soylent Green machine.

People know that ultimately this is their future -- and you're quite right, it strips you of life's meaning -- but don't want to think about it. To dwell on it is to court madness, and making threads asking why doesn't everyone just pack it in and really live, like you don't understand why others aren't as well off as you are, is just gloating and baiting.

Good day, sir.

Although I agree with much of what you say many people imo are blinkered. They can't see beyond the norm!
I'm not meaning to be flippant about anything.
I have found a way to live cheaply and happy using what I've gained in life together with a small income from my businesses!

Yes there are many people who live on the bread line and can not better their situation!

However there are also many with good houses, expensive cars, they live the good life just to keep up with the Joneses. If they were not so flippant with their money and downsized not living the high life then they would be able to do the same as me!
It's not essential to be 'rich'

Take stock of your own assets atm and think how you could live a different life with what you have.

That's a valid point, and the expansion that your OP needed to take it out of the "Behold, peasants!" realm in which in resides.

People being careless with their money is indeed a big factor in them trapping themselves, but then again people will always tend to live within their means and try to maintain a status quo without looking forward. Those people honestly shouldn't be complaining about worrying about retirement or crying about being broke, especially when flaunting the nice house, expensive cars and all mod cons that you mention.

On the flip side, Greg Gregson over there, who has busted his ass for the past 30 years unfortunately fighting his way into, and out of, dead end after dead end really doesn't want to read about someone who has enough money to keep themselves happy muse over the existential trappings of the 9-5.

:)

True, but Greg Gregson isn't the only one reading this!
Accepted, some can't but then some can!

For instance.
Not what anyone can do but I expect some could and haven't thought about it.

Sell up here, up sticks and move to Poland!
You can live like a King there for a fraction of the cost here!

The Polish come here to earn a fortune - in their eyes - and many take it back home to live a much better life!

Mikey, the more posts you make the less and less I understand where you're coming from.

In one breath you say "why are people working all the live-long day and saving up for the future they might not have" and in the next you're saying "why are people spending all of their money on stuff now and not planning for the future"...

Specifically you say:
However there are also many with good houses, expensive cars, they live the good life just to keep up with the Joneses. If they were not so flippant with their money and downsized not living the high life then they would be able to do the same as me!
Which tells me that this thread is so out of place because you're not questioning the meaning of life, or indeed what is the right way to live it. Because even people with plenty of money cannot necessarily live the rest of their lives on it without working, no matter how frugal they are. Now if you own your own businesses I assume you're not an absolute clod to think that everyone with nice cars and houses can just quit their jobs and live the life of riley without ever working again. It would take intimate knowledge of someones life to make that kind of calculation.

It seems to me that there are specific people or groups of people that you know that act in this way and you're just not happy about it. So you come and post this thread to get some validation on your point of view. Which sounds more absurd by the minute.

This bit in particular:
they would be able to do the same as me!
Tells me that you think your life is better than theirs and that you are in the right.

Well that was well analysed skyfall.

I can see where you're coming from regarding my OP but you must realise it's very had to give accurate views/feelings/opinions in just a small amount of posts especially when I'm being hit from all sides!

I entitled the post 'What is life all about' not specifically aimed at my life, but in general.

Basically, I'm happy with the way I live my life. I'm not saying it's better than anyone else's life because 1. I don't judge how other people live, thats for them to decide and 2. The way I live my life may not suit everyone.
It just occurred to me that so many people, imo, struggle when they could make it easier for themselves by adopting a few changes.

It appears my post hasn't gone down well but not to worry, everyone has their own opinion.
