770 or 7970?

With regards overclocking, come on guys i buy from overclockers, im a frequenter of the forums of course i plan on overclocking xD i have an ati 7850 atm and its overclocked like a boss, did actually overclock it too much and had to tone it down a bit.

I must admit mind after looking at the 770lightning im drawn to it somthing cronic! The lure of free games is nice with the 7970 tho thats for sure. I just want (as we all do) the best i can get atm.

Just a thought would it be worth concidering somthing like a 4gb 770? Just incase?

I couldn't recommend the HIS 7970 more strongly over that £400 card, given the price, the free games, the performance...

If you have to pay £400 for a 770, you might as well spend try to source a GTX780 for £500. £80 extra for 2GB more vram on the 770 is too steep.

At that amount I'd just go for 2x7950s

Or that. But personally, I still have my doubts toward Crossfire. Still far too much issues...and not as reliable and smooth as SLI (despite the AMD cards may have higher frame rate figures).

I dont feel anymore forward lol, i keep humming and hahing, and although the at stock the 770 wins i know from what i have now ati cards are so easy to overclock and like to be overclocked. Im gonna put two cards up, there the same price in retrospect as if i got the ati one i'd sell the mouse and mouse mat getting about 50quid back. Im thinking lets start a vote? Whatever card gets the most votes ima just get that one lol

There is no reason to spend so much on Lightning graphics cards unless you're going for a MEGA overclock.

Lightnings are for beyond that, volt mods, loads of watercooling and all that.

I have the 7950 versions of those 7970s and they overclock quite well.

I probably gonna get called fanboy for this, but why are people STILL recommending the GTX770 which only hitting 256GB/s on the memory bandwidth even with the memory clock overclocked to 8000MHz, when the 7970 is hitting 345GB/sec with the memory clock overclocked to 7200MHz?

The performance difference on the GPU side between the 770 and 7970 GHz Edition there's nothing worth writing home about, yet so many people still think the 770 is good value with both lesser vram and much lower memory bandwidth when the prices are similar?

who cares about fanboys, 7970 is the best card for its value.
why pay more for features that give you worse options?
its a solid choice and best of its class.

Genuinely, I think some people have a hard time not choosing nVidia, even when they know it's against others' better judgement.

That's the thing. 8/10 people seem to confuse "memory capacity (the amount of vram)" with "memory bandwidth (the rate at which data can be read from or stored into the memory by the GPU)".

GTX770 256-bit memory clock at stock 7000MHz = 224GB/sec
HD7970 GHz 384-bit memory clock at stock 6000MHz = 288GB/sec

GTX770 256-bit memory clock overclocked to 8000MHz = 256GB/sec
HD7970 384-bit memory clock overclocked to 7200MHz = 345GB/sec

None at the the moment, unless you play skyrim with loads of mods.
