*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

Got my S4 along with the Neo Hybrid case the other day. Really impressed with everything and in particular the screen. I'm not keen at all on the default interface (as if it's designed for kids) but in the process of changing. Whilst the case does make the phone a little on the large side it's very impressive. The only other negative I can really pick out is that the back of the case of the s4 itself is very thin and appears quite breakable. Obviously a very minor thing when outer cased as it's protected and not removed often.

Does anyone recommend a higher capacity 3rd party battery and what news feed widgets do people recommend? Simple/basic please to go with:

As much as i love and have loved AOSP roms until they camera quality is on a par with TW i wont be using them again. They look pretty and all that but as i use my camera a lot its a big ask to sacrifice.

What i cant understand is why hasnt anyone been able to rip the TW framework powering the GE edition camera and incorporate it in the AOSP camera. Makes no sense!

I'll be sticking to FH. Its very AOSP themed anyway and he's always making it more AOSP.

Couple of questions:

If a root my phone will I loose my contacts?

Also can anyone recommend a 2.1A (or more) USB adapter and lead which will give me the best charging performance. Looking for a separate lead and USB adapter so I can also use it to charge other things when I need to. Had a look on Amazon but worried about buying something that turns out to be junk. Would also prefer if it doesn't make a loud humming noise when its charging. Had a charger which did that and was therefore rendered useless. Don't need something humming all night next to my bed!

Also if anyone has got any recommendations on a good case for using the phone when running that would be great.

Nope you won't lose your contacts as they're stored in the could by Google.
This is an authentic 2A Samsung charger http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CSRTGDK/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I bought one a couple of weeks ago to keep at work.

Massive one here - Zerolemon 7500mAh - :D

I personally would wait for Samsung's official extended battery - 3000mAh+ with hardly any extra thickness.

Sync contacts with your Google account. And you don't usually wipe any data when you root anyway.

As said buy the Genuine Note2 or S4 charger as they are the only ones that will charge at ~ full 2A/10W.

The graph below shows the benefits of using Samsung's own charger vs. a standard charger that implements the USB BC 1.2 specification.

When used with the bundled charger, the Galaxy S 4 recharges much faster than HTC's One, despite using a larger battery. Obviously the Galaxy S 4 will charge with any USB charger, but the charge time will simply be longer.

Samsung uses a voltage divider and signals the presence of their own charger by sending 1.2-1.3 V across the D+ / D- pins, this is similar to what Apple does with 2.0 or 2.8 V across the pins for various USB chargers they've shipped over the years.

This signaling is essentially Samsung's proprietary tablet charging signaling which they've employed on the Galaxy Note 2 and now SGS4, in fact the two use the same exact charger, so it's worth tossing out your old ones and getting the appropriate one to take advantage of the faster charging.

where's the cheapest place for the official windowed book cover?

EBay, I was massively underwhelmed with both the Note and S3 official flip cases so bought the Spigen Slim Armor view and I'm happy to say I'm massively whelmed with it, I think it's the best case I've ever owned it's less bulky than any of the slim flip cases I've bought for the S4 or N4 adds about 3mm when closed possibly less.

El1te - did you install PAC in the end?

I'm really liking it, just love the extra tweaking available over FH and the fact that I don't have to install additional framework - it's just all baked in.

Performance is just as good as FH, batterylife if still good not noticed any major dives after giving it time to settle (2days). NFC was on by default, which is now turned off after I realised.

Using the bundled kernel - other kernels seem to have their fair share of bugs, and the stock one seems ok soo far.

EDIT - Not had a single random reboot - though have had a few occasion where it's locked up for a few seconds, nothing major at all. Now that's its all setup the way I want, performance is great.

For me I have been a stock nexus user having owned all the nexus devices. Part of me wants to stick the Google edition on it when it arrives on Monday. But how many people use stock and are the custom ROMs a half way house between the two ?

I've decided to bacl-up and do a fresh install tonight. Upgrade to Fochound 1.4 while I'm at it. I feel it's all getting a bit messy.

I tried the Google edition rom. It's very naked, nice and clean but Samsungs own stock rom, rooted and all the bloat taken out is the best Imho. It's android. Set it up how you like. Only thing that really annoys me on S4 Samsung based rom is its missing the S3 browser. S4 one based on Chrome is just wrong. I use Next browser now.

You might like this then, in one lovely CWM flash.

(It's basically the S3 browser, with flash, and bookmark syncing from desktop chrome.)
