upgrade my sons pc

This is what I'd go for, with a view to adding a dedicated graphics card (and maybe SSD) later down the line:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A8-5600K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor **FREE SIMCITY PC GAME** (AD560KWOHJBOX) £67.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G186C9K) £59.99
1 x ASRock FM2A75M-DGS AMD A75 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £52.99
Total : £191.77 (includes shipping : £9.00).

Should play those games at 720P from what I understand, but will be on lower settings I think.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Athlon X4 750K Black Edition 3.40GHz (Socket FM2) Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD750KWOHJBOX) £61.99
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU) £47.99
1 x Asus F2A55-M LE AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £43.99
Total : £164.77 (includes shipping : £9.00).

£155.77 with free P&P

This is another option, but you will need to also add a used dedicated graphics card, for just under £45 you should be able to get something that will do ok for 720P, something like a GTX 550ti should do fine.

I deleted my post as I wondering if the board took DDR 3 RAM, but look at a 7850 GPU with a second hand Q9xxx cpu.

Just reiterating what Idleman mentioned :)

From what I've read it should be ok at that res and medium quality.

The 1866MHz ram should also help the frame-rate a little.

Though with the first spec I suggested you would want to add a dedicated graphics card at some point, to get the most out of it.

Until you did it should run very well with everyday tasks etc and run the games mentioned low-med settings @720p

Only me who would stay on 775?

Q6600 (example) - £40
8800GT (example) - £25
2GB more RAM - £10

£75

Sell the Core 2 Duo - £15
Sell the 8400GS - £15

£75 - £30 = A total outlay of around £45.

Could get away with using the same OS then (or at least the same licence) and it will save the trouble of trying to sell an entire core system.

I would much rather have a Q6600 and an 8800GTS for £45 than an APU based system for £200 (minus £60 or so for selling the old stuff) = £140

Unless i'm going nuts (always possible) an 8800GT will be a fair bit better than HD7570G anyway.

Bit late to the party. :D

Very valid point and would suit his needs for now, but I personally would go for the APU based system, as it's within budget and will be fairly cheap to make it a lot faster for a future upgrade (Dedicated Graphics card and an SSD). Aka much more future proof in my opinion.
