Tottenham Hotspur are ready to restart contract talks with Gareth Bale this week but are facing the prospect of another bid from Real Madrid as the race to secure the future of the Wales international intensifies.

Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, quit his family holiday in Florida to fly back to London and is expected to approach Bale’s representatives in the next few days over a deal worth about £170,000 a week and is determined to snub offers from Madrid, despite already receiving and rejecting a world-record £81 million bid.

Telegraph Sport understands that contract talks reached a stalemate months ago even though Andre Villas-Boas, the manager, insisted last week that negotiations were ongoing but Spurs will step up their attempts to persuade Bale to stay at White Hart Lane for at least another season.

Bale is fully aware of the interest from Madrid, however, and Carlo Ancelotti is poised to make another blockbuster offer which could include players such as Fabio Coentrao and Ángel di María as part of the deal.

The package would come close to £100 million and shatter the previous world record fee of £80 million that Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

There is no guarantee that Bale, 24, will sign the contract even if it is offered to him and the interest from the Spanish giants has left him seriously considering his next move.

He is disillusioned by Spurs’ fierce rearguard action and Villas-Boas is also growing increasingly concerned that Madrid’s persistence, and the apparent impasse between the club and Bale’s representatives, could result in the winger leaving White Hart Lane in the next few weeks.

After the 6-0 victory against South China on Saturday Villas-Boas was repeatedly questioned about Bale’s future but cut a downbeat figure and neglected to expand on the issue, refusing to even acknowledge the bid from Madrid.

Levy has consistently reiterated to Villas-Boas that he would not sell Bale this summer and is believed to have had further talks to assure him over the past 48 hours.

Spurs arrived back in London on Sunday after flying back from Hong Kong, though Bale did not play in both matches in the Asia Trophy due to a muscle problem.

He could play against Monaco in a friendly this weekend but the saga is set to escalate before then, with Spurs seemingly facing a losing battle to keep him in the capital.

David Pleat, a former Tottenham manager, is convinced that Levy will still enhance his reputation as one of the toughest negotiators in European football and maintain his stance.

He told Talksport: “Tottenham have control and the final say and they will decide if he goes. I don’t think there’s the panic from the club’s point of view that there seems to be in the media. The club mustn’t bow to the pressure from outside.

“But they were talking £50million, £60million earlier in the summer. This could rise to something crazy like £100  million, which would blow any club out of the water.

“At that stage, even Tottenham, who have resisted strongly, may have to look at it. How do you resist that type of money? Manchester United couldn’t resist it for Ronaldo.”

take the cash and 2 players deal levy.

Owen has been talking a lot of crap lately. About Bale and Suarez. After Bale, he declared Suarez moving would be a sideways step. I'm sick of people saying that.

One club in the champs league, the other is not
One club has been in the champs league 16 years running, the other is in it very rarely now
One club has a brand new 65,000 seater stadium built and paid off.
The other is yet to enter their period of a new stadium and increased frugality to cover cost.
One club has a secure future in terms of ownership
The other has been like a hot potato in recent years

You forgot One club celebrates 4th place like wining the league, I'm sure he would love to be part of that.

Thing is there's new money in town and prices have gone up. We need to move with the times and accept that good players are 10-20 mill and great players and prospects 30 mill plus. That means equalling or bettering our previous record buys just to buy 'quality' it puts the fear of God into our board doing so but we must to remain competative.

In truth you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince and the Price of good frogs has increased but then so has our TV money our global branding money etc

this is why el rooney questioned our ambition. Do the glazer chiefs have the finances to blow the kind of cash we need to over a longer term?

Sure we won the league and still have a decent squad. But our competition has not stood still they have spent another 100 million on closing that gap.

It's a bit rich though isn't it. Rogers expecting loyalty from one player while simultaneously sending another on loan without so much as telling him until it's time to board the plane?

I don't think Pepe has lost motivation but that is a pretty stupid comparison, no other club has fallen like we have for more than a year recently.

Not at all, true we weren't in the league at all, but then again every team outside the top 3 doesn't have a prayer either, we we're still winning trophies however.

Great keeper, one of my favourite players ever, didn't do himself to many favours talking before a Barca move came, bit harsh of the club but he was gone next year anyways. Pity some of our fans were absolute ***** about him in recent years

As soon as he started with the Barca love, along with his drastic loss of form the more sensible amongst us wanted to get a replacement in, and I'm glad we have this window rather than our usual stance of getting stiffed when the player leaves.

same stance as with Suarez, you don't want to play for us. Fine goodbye, thanks for the memories

I'm only concern that if a deal is to had, then it's not too late. £80M+ is a lot of cash to sit on during the close window. We've had the same thing the last 3 or 4 seasons. It's unsettling for the rest of the team. I'd be annoyed at Levy if he changed his mind 2 games into the new season. Now's the time.

Bit like the 'most sensible' wanted rid of Rafa after one bad year :)
