soo. broke my back

They're perfectly fine if used correctly, just like anything really. Of course accidents will still happen like in the OPs case but most injuries are from people being idiots. If I can ride one safely, anyone should be able to. My balance is terrible, I seriously find myself falling over standing still :o...

I broke the L1 vert. Bit more than a fracture buts its "stable" so they dont want to do anything but dope me up and see if I can move in the morning.
I plan to get a second opinion from bupa in a couple of days though.

I dont know how I managed to fall off the silly segway, people tell me I hit a rock and it chucked me off and I did a flip and landed bolt upright on my bum.

Oh well.

What annoys me now if that my phone is low on battery and im here all night with no charger!

If you have medical insurance with Bupa already I would ring them now and get your self in the system.

As much as it doesn't seem like a blessing, you are at least not paralysed or have anything worse. A lot of people recover from vertebra breaks with little issues.

It's still a horrid position to be in, bed ridden for such a long time will be tough but hopefully you'll be back on your feet in top condition.

I wish you a quick and painless recovery.

Wow, unlucky fella, sorry to hear that. Note to self, don't ride a segway, I would much rather get hurt doing something with a little more cred!

I hired a Segway during my 6 months at CalTech. It was awesome. Why they're not legal for everyday use over here is beyond me.

From what you can find on the internet, they are classified as a powered vehicle here in the UK and are therefore subject to the same laws that govern road going vehicles. As such the device itself doesn't meet the required safety standards to be on the road, so it can't only be used on private property.

People crashing them aside, there is also the fact that we as a country aren't really setup for them. It might be fine in somewhere like the US where they have lots of open spaces and specific walk/run/cycle lanes, but we don't have so much of that here. With narrow congested pavements, its already a nightmare when you have people on mobility scooters, so having devices that aren't disability devices taking up even more space on pavement designed for pedestrians isn't a good idea.

At least it's not permanent damage. The worst will probably be the muscle atrophy, which'll take quite some time to fix.

Best time to get some gaming and studying done, hope you recover well. :)

I'm involved with a Spinal Injuries charity and I've heard stories resulting in paralysis that could turn the strongest stomach. I have a complete spinal cord injury (broke my neck) resulting in paralysis.

To the OP I hope your recovery goes well, these types of spinal injuries just require time to heal. You could be up and about towards the end of your enforced bed rest with the aid of a compression brace but you can't rush things as everyone is different.

I fractured a vertebrae some 10-15 years ago.

The bed bit is hell, I kept spilling coffee when checking to see if the cup was empty. And having a poo was very embarrassing.

I got a metal reinforced corset eventually which I had to wear for a few months, this meant pooing standing up which was messy but much less embarrassing.

I broke a femur and shoulder blade at the same time which made things quite awkward.

Getting the full strength back afterwards took a year or so of gym work. Long term backache was resolved with Yoga once approved by my GP.

Best of luck with your recovery, a lucky escape. :)

Sorry to hear about your paralysis, nice touch doing charity work.

Have a speedy recovery OP.
