*** Official Nintendo Wii U thread ***

I don't understand people that say the Wii U hardware is weak - the Wii U is categorically more powerful than the 360 or PS3, and there's plenty more to come as developers find optimisations.

The Wii U sits nicely inbetween PS3/360 and the new generation PS4/XB1 - it's perfectly placed - it's where it needs to be.

It's barely above the PS3/360, with 3rd parties shifting their focus to next gen I can't see them wanting to port their games down to a system with only 1GB of available RAM when the other 2 systems have 5GB available.

Well that's the thing, With numbers like these a 3rd party isn't going to waste time and money on the system much longer. They are busy getting ready for ps4 and XO. 10k units shipped between Europe and Aus is crazy.

If it continues the ps4 and XO could out ship the Wii U this year..

Just barely being able to beat a 7 year old console which was made on 90nm iirc, with a 40nm chip this much later IS pathetic.

Beating 7-8 year old hardware in the technology industry is embarrassingly easy. The best example of tech today, will look crap compared to what we have in 7 years. What is difficult to make today will be blindingly easy to make in 7 years, thats how technology is.

The Wii U is massively underpowered for a console released in 2012 intended for use over the next say 4-5 years. You can get the worst possible smartphone available today and of course it will be faster than the best smartphone from 5 years ago... that doesn't make it fast or good. The 360/ps3 are seriously underpowered hardware today, they were underpowered(but very well utilised) 7 years ago let alone today.

In terms of games driving sales, we've seen already that previous game releases have driven sales up, with iirc them saying along the lines of sales going up 200% or something for, I forget the game. The problem was the sales were something like 2500 and the new game pushed sales to 5-6k. If Pikmin increases sales 400%, its still no where near enough. The problem is the die hard fans, the guys who bought Wii's and absolutely loved them, already brought their Wii U's, the guys who didn't like their Wii's won't buy Wii U's. The people who got into lighter/cheaper gaming with a Wii who decided they loved gaming, a lot of those will probably move up to a XB1/PS4. The Wii U barely beating the last gen while being expensive and using overpriced hardware was absolutely the wrong move.

AS for cash on hand, people forget what a lot of businesses do... when it goes bad SOME invest all their money, lose it all or make more, a LOT cash out while they have the money rather than risk all their cash.

Software shifts consoles and a steady stream of software is coming out between now and the end of the year. Consoles sold and shipped will increase drastically by the end of the year for the Wii U.

Do you honestly think anything other than Mario 3D world is actually going to shift consoles? The other titles coming out will sell to people who already own the console, but I can't see those games actually making much difference to hardware sales.

Pikmin hit number 2 in the UK chart, but there was no sign of Nintendo Land in the top 40, since bundled games are counted for the charts this means that sales of Nintendo Land are closely linked to premium consoles sold, since Nintendo Land didn't chart in the top 40 this means that it's very unlikely that additional premium consoles sold the week Pikmin came out, meaning it didn't really shift hardware to new customers.

Read what I've said...a steady stream of software...not just one title alone but you need more than one release to build the momentum and I am fairly sure this will come.

I know your view on it and you know mines, we'll just need to see how it pans out.

The WiiU is underpowered and 3rd party support will be poor. And it's a shame - Nintendo could have released a comparatively powerful console to the PS4 and XB1, had all the 3rd party support they could want, plus exclusives that no other developer can get within a country mile of matching. How could that not have dominated? The time was right - people would have flocked to the new uber powerful Nintendo console. Let the PS4 and XB1 duke it out with their almost identical line-ups. However, despite all this, I have no doubt that some of the very best games of this gen will be exclusive to the WiiU. It will likely have more must have exclusives than either XB1 or PS4. Right now I'm playing Pikmin3 while my other consoles and gaming PC sit idly by. It's also the first time we get to play Nintendo games in HD. GC and Wii games look glorious on the Dolphin emulator - they will look better on the WiiU. It's still a must have console for any gamer serious about playing the best games around, and the games are on the way. There's more to be excited about software wise this year on the WiiU than on either of the next gen consoles.

The problem is that they're shortly going to be finding themselves competing for sales and attention with the PS4 and Xbox One. The only way that launching a new console a year before the 'next gen' was going to work was if they were able to wow the market and use their 12 month lead as an advantage.

Even with the games, retail space is going to be consumed by the One and the PS4 and the associated games to go with them. The Wii U is going to be fighting just to be noticed.

I don't think Nintendo could compete to be honest. In gamers eyes, maybe but for the "core audience" not a chance. They could have been more successful than they currently are now but with a lot more risk involved and without the year advantage over Microsoft/Sony (it would take longer to develop a higher spec console and get agreements with chip makers etc).

The core audience is no longer peeps like us who have knowledge of the industry and know what to expect from games. The 360/PS3 core audience is Fifa/COD bros who only buy 3-4 games a year with barely any knowledge of the game before playing it. Nintendo wouldn't be able to convince those type of gamers to convert over to them without getting COD as an exclusive which is money Nintendo doesn't want to spend, this would also alienate Nintendo's actual core audience which is based around nostalgia and interesting game experiences.

I'm sure the WiiU will make sense in the end as Nintendo products always do, it will have its Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, SSB and all the usual that Nintendo produce to make the console a viable purchase for Nintendo fans. They just won't be able to grab hold of the casual s as the WiiU doesn't add anything new that is appealing for them. Most of the casual purchasers semi got sung by the Wii as in they bought it, then it has sat in a cupboard for the past 2-3 years after the novelty worn off.

No wonder Asda dropped it, 10K...my god. Thats not even Britain, thats Europe and Australia.

They better hope for a miracle, for now its dead. At the end of the year they have the XB1/PS4 coming out and probably price cuts on the 360/PS3 which are both going to be supported for the next couple of years. The Wii U doesn't have a market worth working with here on current terms.

Oh look more doom and gloom.
Everyone is waiting for the games.
I repeat.
If you think that Zelda WWU, Smash bros and Mario Kart 8 arent going to sell this console then you are retarded.
Until then feel free to play the Broken Record

Everyone? Come off it most people don't even know that the thing even exists!

Hopefully there will be an upturn but you cannot deny those results are desperately low.

Everyone is going to be busy with their ps4 and Xbox one. To care too much, If you can't see this thing has been a failure... You are "retarded"

So basically wait for the console to be out for 1.5-2 years before actual games worth buying the console for come out? Nice argument.

And Sony/MS fanboys get stick for being how they are, Nintendo are living on past glories.

To me it's like Liverpool fans, and Man Utd fans.

Fact is no-one in general population will give a **** about the Wii U when the XB1 & PS4 release.

But I'll await the Nintendo die hard fans to say otherwise.

Its amusing because I am not a die hard Nintendo fan, and yet I disagree with your post.

I picked up the Wii U when there was the price drop to £200 a week or so ago. I am happy with the purchase. I use the Wii U for casual gaming with the misses, and for some party games like mario etc. Yet predominantly I am a PC/Xbox gamer.

I have a PS3, and it gets used the least.

The WiiU has its place. Yes its not up there with the big boys but in my opinion it doesn't have to be.

That's precisely my take on it too - I bought at £180 2nd hand, made a lot of sense, it's already proved a superb family machine and I'm very much looking forward to the upcoming releases.

At £200 it's got a place in the market, Nintendo really need to drop the premium to £200 and it'll start shifting.
