*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

I disagree. My gf just loves the Apple brand and she has everthing that is Apple related. She has a macbook, iphone5 which she upgrades religiously every year, a ipad and an ipad mini. Not only does the phone do the job for her but she's not into the whole customisation thing that Android offers. Out of the box Apple products just work. Hell she doesn't even bother with the new firmware updates that are released and I end up installing everything for her. Her best friend is exactly the same and literally has everything Apple too. I guess their both Apple fanatics ;) They're both very image conscious and try and mock my Android phone (whatever I have at the time) In their mind Apple epitomizes the ultimate coolness. She even has this Louis Vuitton case for her iphone and ipad (that's going a bit too far IMO) :o

On the other hand there's a girl I know who is the polar opposite of my gf and she has an Android phone, and into gaming, actually she's a self confessed geek and has rooted her phone installed custom ROMs, the whole 9 yards.

It's just a mindset really. Out of the box Apple products just work but they also ooze coolness which some people crave, that's my opinion and observations that have been made when talking to my gf and my other friend.

Dump your gf and go out the other girl, she sounds far more fun

man I'm all sorts of lost on this pacman ROM. Is there a way to just have all the dpi etc set to something like normal CM10.1? Like with an override across the whole system?

There is but if you don't know how then it will seem a bit daunting :D

Love PAC.

Love PAC.

I'm getting on fine with CM10.1 now :) to be honest the extras in PAC didn't matter much to me anyway I just wanted AOSP with trimmings and working hence the attempt with PAC.

In actual fact I'm sure I could get on fine with the google edition rom if I could adequately tweak the status par to have a battery percentage in a circle (or not gaudy graphics basically) which I thought I'd found with Null but then it had a really awful blue centre alligned clock in the status bar with no am/pm option.

Final way would be google edition and then flash the modded system ui and the battery circle I think you might have linked before but that always seems to bork the systemui but flashing the battery mod even on a deodexed GE rom did nothing.

So I was finally thinking the modded systemui and battery thing would only work on a completely stock GE build and that the mods people on XDA have done mod the systemui so it won't allow another mod.

Then I threw in the towel and flashed CM10.1 again lol.

Only slight issue now is I know I've got a worse camera which isn't a biggy for me but does occasionally come in handy, again which was pointing me at a GE rom.

Very confusing but I'm happy with CM10.1 at the moment.

Final thing, I was on wanam with jbdom before with the stock AOSP mms/dialler/nova launcher/holo locker but liggle niggles like if you locked the screen then unlocked it you see the TW lockscreen for a couple of seconds before it realises it should be using holo locker and the odd clash with the stock dialler/calculator/mms etc made it feel hacky even though it was basically stock with a decent camera.

Argh! I do see why these silly girls with their style over substance requirements prefer ios.. pretty little things they are.

but then I'm about to put iOS7 on my iPhone 5 for the lols so that'll be unstable and hacky soon too :)

Very common issue, you'll need to flash the Wifi Fix:

Many thanks for the heads up mate, I applied the fix last night but it took a couple of attempts as after the first attempt it did not cure the problem but after the second attempt it seemed to of worked but the Wifi is still being temperamental (keeps turning off at random intervals and fails to turn on again for a few minutes).

I have a feeling that it's all down to this new MGA firmware as I've also been experiencing a couple of freezes and reboots when the phone is upgrading apps simultaneously. I'm currently trying to find a link to the MEA firmware so I can downgrade to that. However, the only links to download it that are available are via Hotfile and it takes an absolute age to download from there (over 2 hours for the 1.6GB file)

Out of the box Apple products just work...

So do Android products. You don't have to tinker with android to make it work.
This argument is used a lot and i don't see the merits. I know lots of people with stock roms and they dont have any reservations....

Nearly everyone has an iPhone these days which kind of does not make it cool at all.

iOS 7 will suit the female population just fine with its pastel and kindergarten look. Its too, whats the word,........childish i think.

:D

Since it was rooted they charged £50 to repair at as my warranty is void. They replaced the motherboard and it seems okay now!

£50 isn't bad considering though Mate, am glad that all's well with your S4. I've replied back to your email! :)

The truth of it is you get guys like that (like the people who flat refuse to root, there's also plenty of chaps in the Apple forums here who wouldn't dream of having anything other than an iPhone... I was there myself until recently although I have the luxury of having a job that means I have to have all the new Apple stuff too) and girls that aren't it's not a sex thing apart from the fact I think it's easily agreed that you get more guy geeks.

Spot on with your observations there Mate, and yes there's definitely more guy geeks then girl geek out there. :D

I would but the other girl isn't much of a looker compared to my gf! ;)

Now rooted my phone and probably going to try and install FoxHound later. Just want to check I'm going to do it correctly...

So basically download this ROM and copy it to my phone's memory (can I put it on the SD card, not much space left in the phone itself?)
Boot into recovery, select the ROM and install it?
I take it I just leave it in the zipped folder, no need to unzip it?
Will this completely remove the stock rom and therefore free up a lot of storage?
Will it also remove a lot of the bloatware or do I need to do that separately after installation?

Have been looking around the XDA forum but there is so much information I don't even know where to start tbh.

Just got my 1st Android phone, switch from Apple as got fed up of iTunes and the stupid lock in.

Galaxy S4 :) Quite pleased with it after 3 days.

If your recovery can see both SDCard and Internal, then you can put it anywhere. When I flashed mine, For some reason it wouldn't recognise the external SDCard so I had to pop it on the internal.

Its best to format /Data when you get into recovery, so its a 'clean' flash.

The firmware is based on Samsungs firmware, So its still crippled with only 9gb free, But you can install a minimal version (afaik) so there will be more free space. You can also go ahead and get rid of a few extras that are on there if you dont use them.

And yes, You leave it in the Zip folder :)

I have a 200MB AOSP ROM and free space is still 9GB. You have to change partition sizes to regain any unused system space.

Sidenote: Love custom DPI per app

tell me you didnt install cpu spy just to use a custom DPI :p Actually what am i saying..... the ROM has performance control built in (which you can apply a custom DPI to)....so why are you using cpu spy? :p

Because I use them like a trip computer. One for the long run and the other for shorter times :P .

I now like how I can fit all the cpu states on one screen.

Well I'm still experiencing problems with my S4 even after downgrading to the MEA firmware last night :( The Wifi is still being temperamental and I'm getting random reboots when trying to web browse/update apps.

I'm currently downloading the newest MGA firmware again as last ditched attempt to see if it sorts out the problems and if not, I'm going to get in touch with Samsung as I feel that the phone may need a repair.

Might be worth while clearing cache and dalvik in the stock recovery. That may help.....

Have you tried installing the stock rom back on it turning it back to how it was out of the box.

Ok couple more questions regarding installing ROMs.

Installed FoxHound earlier but wasn't really sure what options to pick during the install regarding messaging etc. Ended up without the text message facility so obviously I picked something wrong. Now flashed back to stock but might give it another go. Can anyone point me in the direction of explanations for the various options you get during the actual installation and which ones to pick?
