well decided to put another hard drive in my pc the problem was all my sata connectors are being used so to took an idea from this forum and used a sata to esata cable and plugged it from my hard drive to esata on the back of my pc but that stopped the dvd rom drive from showing in windows.
Any ideas of other ways of doing this apart from a sata card ?

If the hard drive you're adding is larger than the other drives already in your system, copy the contents of the smallest drive onto the new one, then remove the smaller drive to make way for the whopper*.

* A whopper is either a hamburger, or a hard drive over 1TB.

I wanted add an extra drive to the 6 already in use.

Maybe it's a limitation of your motherboard, but have you tried to see if Windows is simply failing to assign a drive letter your DVD rom when you are using esata ? (Right hand click "Computer" > Manage > Storage).

Hard drive shows up in windows no problem there but makes dvd rom disappear.
