I have recently obtained a processor and would like to build around it, fancy giving me a hand?

My friend has upgraded his processor and gave me his old one:

AMD Bulldozer FX-6100 Socket AM3+ 6 Core Processor - 3.30GHz, 3.90GHz Turbo

I am looking to spend around £600 (give or take £50) and a computer that can comfortably run games. I have no problem assembling it, but I want to make sure I don't bottle neck myself with any of the components and I've heard good things about this forum.

If you would recommend paying more than my budget please just let me know as hardware isn't exactly my speciality.

Thanks in advance!

That processor will bottleneck anything you build with it. This means that while your CPU is running at 100%, the components are running a lot less, could even be 50-70%.

Ideally, you want the other components like the g/card to be running at 90-100% and the CPU to run at 65/70%.

Have you actually bought the CPU? It's not a great CPU, the 6300/8350 would have been a more ample choice. A better choice would be going with Intel.

The 6100 is as workhorse yes, but it's not cost effective, efficient or able to compete with the likes of the 2nd Gen Intel 2500k/2600k.

I'd sell the CPU off fella to be honest. You'll just end up in your mates shoes looking to upgrade to a 8320 CPU.

That's just the tower obviously. There is a free trial for windows 8 you can use for 3 months to see if you like it, saves buying an OS right away too if you need one.

This GPU overclocks to trade blows with a stock 7950 so is amazing bang for buck. A semi-modular PSU would be nice but I was trying to keep to the £650 budget. Hope this helps

Haha don't I look foolish. I'm going to reconsider my options in that case and I'll get back to you guys once I have a better idea of my situation. Thanks for the information though, much appreciated.

Don't take this the wrong way guys, I know your doing your best to help, but would the OP not be better off just biting the bullet and buying windows, rather than the free trial that cannot be upgraded.

As having to reinstall windows and change all the settings back after 3 months seems very tedious to me to be honest.

According to the guidelines on the MS website, you can activate it if you have purchased a license after the 90 days has expired. It's a trial not a preview.

Are you sure mate?

Under the "Things to Know Before You Start" it reads as though you have to reinstall after the 3 months?

Yeah nice! The B grade mobo helps pay for a cooler to OC (The D3H is better than the LX). It might need some sata cables though, not that they are dear.

Only the one 7950 as B grade and I imagine that will sell quick, the 7870LE is a good alternative new should that sell out :)
