Hello i've been thinking about building a gaming pc but with the next gen consoles coming out i'm worried it would become obsolete.

Now i know a top end pc will always outperform a console but how much would i need to spend to rival a ps4?
How often would a pc need upgrading over time to keep up?

I was not that impressed with the quality of my ps3, it only lasted 4 years and both my controllers wore out. Since it broke outside the warranty i fixed it myself, which extended it's life a few more weeks before it finally gave up. So i had buy a second ps3 and i'm yet a to have a pc fail.
I also don't like how you are going to have to pay to play online on the ps4 i have heard it will be £50 a year which would rack up over the years.

I'd go for PC, you can get a decent build at the same price, and when you need some more power, put in extra graphic card or upgrade cpu.

depends if you want a one off cost or spend once then more as time goes on
Id go with the PS4 personally.

remember consoles squeeze a lot more power out of the same hardware compared to a PC

Think most people on these forums would say PC but it does really depend what you want to play. In many ways now isn't the best time to be making the decision. People are expecting to get more and better ports on the pc with the new console generation. I'd get a cheap low budget pc now and wait and see how the consoles do. If the ps4 looks okay you could probably get your hands on much cheaper like 3-6 months after launch and if you don't like how it looks you could always use that cash on upgrading the PC.

Buying consoles at launch always seems to be a huge mistake to me. Been caught out by it a few times now. I'd also say you could build a pc for around £400-500 (fair bit of that cash being a case and psu) that will either match or out perform the ps4. The cpu's that are in both the new consoles really seem to lack grunt. my cpu costs £70 and I'm sure its far more powerful that the 8 core 1.6ghz jaguar processors. Games currently aren't that well multi core optimised so it'll probably take them a while to make the most of the cpu as well.

What are you looking to play? What type of games do you like playing?
Personally, if it was FPS' then id always stick with PC but if its games like skyrim, GTA etc then id go for a console.
Dont wanna miss out on GTA V as well!

PC dude.

What i've suggested to my friends that want to convert from console is to build a good core PC (i5K/8320). AMD has new GPUs out October'ish and they have a nice habit of giving away free games (BF4 should come free with their GPUs). So to spread the cost they can worry about the GPU later on.

A PC is a better tool than a console and every home should have one. Think of buying a GPU for it as an alternative to buying a gaming console. You can get GPUs like the 7870LE for ~£150 now. Overclock that and it should easily have more grunt than next gen consoles which aren't even out yet. Next gen consoles are now "talking our CPUs language" so expect multi platform games to be easier to bring to PC.

Head over to the Steam website. You've just missed the summer sale but you can see how cheap some games can be. Consoles have a nasty habit of not letting you use the last gen games on the new systems, no such issue on PC. There is no subscription to pay either which can help justify the cost of a GPU too.

There are all sorts of case choices but that gives you an idea for a very capable gaming rig.

What people actually forget about when talking about buying gaming PCs is that, youre acquiring something that is much more functional that a console.
A console is basically strictly for gaming where as a PC can do a wide range of things. Games are made on PCs, movies are created on PCs, gaming can be done of PCs. Like honosuseri said, every home should have a PC. Youre gaining much more than just a gaming platform.
PCs will never become obsolete, especially when a lot of our rigs destroy supposed "next-gen" consoles.

The rig honosuseri posted is a solid rig for gaming, id invest a bit more in the graphics area and wait for the next AMD line to come up and youre done.
If the PC runs games better than consoles from the start, it should last till the consoles get replaced with PS5 etc. To run every game at max settings will obviously require frequent upgrading but from your post, it seems that you just want something that can compete with a console

PCs are also very reliable, good old RROD. Thanks to terrible solder and cooling, thats what happens with consoles, they just break down. With a PC, unless youre foolish, it should last a life time (not literally...).

Titles on PC are also cheaper than consoles so in the long run, youll actually save a LOT of money. Like the previous poster said, Steam sales are ridiculous, I blew £150 on so many more titles than what the equivalent would get me on consoles. There are reports saying AAA titles will retail for £60 on the next gens so bare that in mind.
Also, when buying titles through Steam, youll always have a copy as long as you remember your account details. No need to worry about breaking or losing disks. Everything is stored in the cloud, Im pretty sure game saves are as well!

All in all, If money isnt a concern, then you should switch over to PC without a doubt.

Even at stock the 7870xt's are actually a fair bit more powerful than what sony and microsoft boast there systems graphical power will be. Its all pretty hypothetical until it's released but going by the teraflop number the xbox one will be around the 7770 range and the ps4 around 7850. at 1080 a 7870 xt benches around 1-2 fps lower than a 7950 and an overclocked 7870xt out performs even the 7950's with boost when at 1080.

Couldn't disagree more.

Skyrim was better on PC, it just showed how far behind consoles were. Many people modded the game on PC to make it vastly more impressive graphically but also added content. PC gamers had to "suffer" Crysis 2 in DX9 and there was a wait before it was patched to DX11 to make proper use of GPUs.

I'd be very surprised if GTA V is not released on PC. We might not get it as soon as consoles but it will most likely be tweaked to make the most of a PCs potential. We should get BF4 before the next gen consoles are released unless they decide to delay it's launch to coincide with the consoles.

Consoles are tempting as people don't understand how to balance a PC spec or simply don't have the inclination to understand it. I don't knock people for taking the "easy out" for gaming. I just found it interesting that it's M$ Xbox live that is pulling in the most cash for the company ;) I really think console users are milked for their cash.

Pc no doubt, i was a console gamer for years strictly playstation, then the network got hacked so i moved to xbox. Imo xbox pwns ps3 btw, but soon got tired of making do with sub standard graphics and got tired of waiting for the next gen so built a cheepo pc for 500quid useing an amd athlon quad core and a 7850. Im playing crysis 3 atm on medium and it still looks fantastic!

Will have my hands on a top spec pc by the end of the month and although the amount im spending would get me two ps4s i know im going to get a lot more out of it in terms of performance, graphical beauty and longevity. Do it take the plunge i've not looked back ;)

I have a dual core PhenomII (OC'd @4Ghz) with a 1GB 460 as a HTPC in the lounge. It easily hands the 360 and PS3 their asses lol Even my console buddies had to confess it looked much better (I switched the inputs to show Farcry 3 on the 360 and PC) and they were frankly shocked when I told them the GPU was only £100 and come October I'll have had it 2 years (still a years warranty left).

It's rumours but I thought the PS4 was roughly on par with the 7870. I deliberately pointed out the 7870LE as it's priced close to 7850/7870s but being a "limited edition" Tahiti core it has more in common with a 7950. OC'ing it means it can do a good impersonation of a £240 GPU :)

I quite like to show this video from a fellow forum member as it shows that it's not hard to make your own "next gen console" now thanks to steam and it's big picture mode :D

Apologies. As soon as I posted those game combinations I knew it was a wrong decision. I was aiming at the genres of games themselves rather than the games. Skyrim is FAR better on PC after its been modded.
What I was trying to get across is for more casual type games like SR, GTA, Skyrim (THAT GENRE!) a console wouldnt be a bad decision.
Hardcore multiplayer games like BF, COD (reaction times etc.) should always be done with a keyboard and mouse.

I was one to "suffer" with Crysis 2 but it wasnt a bit problem for me. DX9 still looked brilliant to me....

I would be surprised to NOT see GTA V on PC but im expecting, yet again, many months of waiting for a bad port. After the console versions got announced, they put up job offers for people to "bring our brilliant games to PC". Im thinking its going to be a terrible port like GTA IV.

With BF4, im expecting another BS "PS4 priority for DLCs etc.". This sort of scheme does nothing but drive me nuts. COD and their stupid 1 month delay for everyone not on XBOX.

Of course, Id always take the PC route, but its not always suitable for some people. I tried to get friends to switch but they absolutely hated it. I blame the consoles for falsely making them seem good in the multiplayer verse and then get smashed when they enter the PC "realm".

Off topic though, Arent the next gen consoles using APUs?

Also some people get put off by keyboard and mouse gaming its easy but you can use controllers aswell and the fact that pc have more grunt,

You will never get a 64 player map on the xbox or ps3 so i doubt ps4 will be much different

I'd go with a PS4. You won't get a PC which will match it for the same price. Especially not with a legitimate OS and when you take into consideration that a PC would have to be considerably more powerful than a PS4 to match it because PS4 games will have highly optimised code.

Aren't sony now charging for online play too? ;) Like I said M$ do very well from the xbox live subscriptions.

There is a free trial of Windows 8 that can be used for 3 months but yes it would need buying at some point.

I've heard the same rumors about xbox one having 7790 performance and ps4 having 7850 to even 7950 performance but until I see it I wont believe it. Those rumors don't really seem to be based on anything but speculation. the only numbers we have are flops. While I agree flops aren't exactly the only or best thing to measure performance In there is for sure a relation between the two. When looking at benchmarks the difference between the Ati gpu's is very close to there tera / giga flop scores.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_7000_Series
(i know its wikipedia but I assume the table is correct)
MS say they can do 1230 gflops. A stock 1gb 7770 does 1280, a 2gb does 1408 and the 7790 does 1792
sony say they push out 1800 gflops . A 7850 does 1761, 7870 - 2560, 7870 boost 2995, 7950 boost 3315.

I know the consoles aren't exactly conventional PC's but I have a hard time believing there performance is so high while the flops are so low. Until something solid is released I'll just use the flops as a rough estimate of performance.
