Am I the only one wondering why these girl smugglers are National News?

They interviewed a bloke locked up over there in that documentary about it last night, he volunteered to carry a kilo of the stuff back here for £5000, now he's in jail for 8 years

So clearly they couldn't have done as you suggest because they were never on the plane.

It is possible for someone to be so intimidated by someone else that they will obey that person's orders even if that person isn't there at the time. Someone who's trafficking cocaine internationally in batches of more than 10Kg is likely to be very rich and very dangerous, someone who you'd believe if they told you they would have you and your family killed if you didn't obey them. It's not that far from Spain to GB or Ireland, so going home wouldn't make them safe.

So I think it's possible that they might have been forced into a situation in which they saw carrying the drugs as the least risky option available to them, and even possible that it was the least risky option available to them.

if they were that scared, they would keep schtum when arrested, those same people could easily kill them/their family just as easily now,

silly little girls, who thought they could get away with it, they didn't

goodbye, and good luck in the showers

Kinda makes Wonga.com look like a good deal! A kilo of coke costs ~ £350 when it leaves Columbia.
When it gets to the UK its worth about £50,000. After its cut, up to £100,000.

Prohibition has a lot to answer for..

how could they have boarded the plane without their passports?

From what I've seen on how these gangs/cartels operate, which I believe was actually shown on one of those banged up abroad shows is that they work like so:

- They are first lured by somebody quite impressionable, say a good looking guy, who speaks their language and befriends them.

- They are invited on a holiday, with or without the information that they are going to be asked to carry something 'small' back with them. While being given an all expenses paid holiday and some money.

- They are checked into a hotel and their passports are taken by the gang, so they can't leave. In the particular case I saw, they were basically held hostage in a hotel room. In another they were given freedom to go do what they wanted, but still didn't have their passport or ticket home.

- The gang turn up with loaded suitcases, plane tickets and their passports. They then take them to the airport where they are forced to board the flight and are waiting outside incase they try and do a runner or alert anyone.

I think what actually happens is that there are then two different aspects in play. The first is the intimidation of the gang in the airport, that they may kill you or something if you don't do as instructed. The second is that now you are in the airport, even if you try and alert somebody, you may already been seen as a drug smuggler as you are trying to board a flight with kilos of drugs. So at that stage, these people really don't have much choice but to go along with it.

So ultimately its not impossible to see how somebody was forced into it. However, the right thing to do would be to alert somebody. Of course though you can't dismiss the fact that at some stage the mules are somewhat complicit in what they are doing. You would have to be seriously naive or have a handicap to believe that somebody is going to give you a free exotic holiday and cash for nothing, especially when these kind of smuggling cases are widely publicised these days.

I think these girls have been setup, yes they got caught but I bet far more drugs got through on that flight then known.

Set up? Would sort of indicate someone wanted them to be caught - rather unlikely given the quantity of drugs concerned.

I think coerced is probable.

He feels his daughter may have been "groomed" by somebody who she may have thought was a friend she made on holiday.

I wonder if that is a polite way of assuming she was getting banged by a drug dealer who persuaded her to carry the drugs.

They seemed really scripted in their interview, but thats all pretty subjective.....I watched "midnight express" when i was younger so i think that it would take something pretty big to do something like that with out coughing at customs, but if there is threats against loved ones its a hard call

Well that's a bit of a stupid question, of course there are better methods of smuggling drugs than using mules, for most countries anyway.

Mules are cheap, easily arranged, disposable to the smugglers and split the consignment up. Say 5% get caught - you lose 5% of your drugs, but you factor that into your pricing and you don't care if some people you regard as disposable get arrested and jailed or killed, as long as they can't implicate you. To someone who is callous enough, it's a workable system.

Just this really, no contact with the actual smugglers themselves (I wonder how many actually get caught after the 'mule' is busted)

If its all factored into the pricing I suppose it would make sense, I wonder for these getting caught how many actually make it through?

Hmmm "Armed Colombians" forced them to try smuggling cocaine. Worst excuse ever!

They tried smuggling cocaine, cocaine is associated with Columbia so lets blame armed Colombians to make then the victim. Story is totally legit and not 100% made up!

i tried smuggling heroin once... The Taliban are responsible for a lot of heroin supply.. Oh wait... Armed Taliban forced me to try to smuggle Heroin!

Any drug + related country+ fictional armed variant of that countries populous = excuse.. Winning Formula

My sister was commenting on this after working holidays to Ibiza and Barbados - unfortunatly I can't remember the exact details but the gist of it was there were elements working the clubs preying on the young and impressionable started with the promoters getting likely girls going to the clubs then a good looking guy who'd hit on them, flash a bit of cash/nice car and then use them when they starting falling for them - not even as far taking their passport/tickets home they'd be tricked into doing a "favor" for the guy or his friends.

Because they are two young, attractive, middle class white girls. If they were two average looking blokes in their mid 30's then it either wouldn't be news or the media would have a completely different slant on things, i.e. scumbags who deserve to rot.

Claiming to have been held at gun point now. They need to be careful about changing their story. If they were held at gun point, their excuse that they didn't know what was in the bags kind of falls apart.
