How safe is Egypt at the minute?

Sharm would be absolutely fine, though it's changed a little bit recently in that the locals are getting a bit more desperate for trade. Still a good place for some winter sun etc if that's the main aim.

I'd say Hurghada *should* be fine too, but it's a bit more risky than Sharm which absolutely has to remain safe or the country will find itself in even more trouble than it is at the moment, they really rely on red sea tourism for jobs etc.

I would probably avoid Luxor for the moment, not because I think it would be unsafe in itself but if anything is/was going to happen to tourists it would be en route between the big resorts/attractions. Within each locality I wouldn't be remotely worried

I don't think Egypt and 'democracy' are mixing too well at the moment.

Horrifying to see snipers taking peaceful protesters out with head shots. Nothing will be done or said by the rest of the world though.

Didn't "we" (as in the west generally) cheer when the president got removed... but now the Muslim fanatics that are in power are worse to the ordinary people who aren't their mates than the president was!

Kind of funny how the facts get distorted.

There were snipers trying to take out armed protestors and there were some collateral casualties ["government"/army claims they only used tear gas and no live fire]

Protestors complain the army/police went in with machineguns and freefire with 100s massacred ["government"/army mostly used tear gas with live fire ostensibly against specific targets]

Collateral casualties from snipers? They can't be very good at their job then. You could accept it from bombs and machine guns but snipers?

Ever tried to take down a specific target within a constantly moving crowd of people? if you watch the videos they are making their way to the front firing off a couple of bursts then moving back in amongst a mix of peaceful and stone throwing protestors.

Do you think most European Countries would give the go a head to use snipers with live ammunition firing on targets that are mingling with innocent protesters? :|

The Army are murdering their own people and no-one will stop them.

Most European countries don't really have the same situation to deal with - you don't see a minor but significant percentage of protestors at a protest in London for instance carrying AK47s.

Presumably its probably a cheaper holiday right now as I would imagine hotel bookings are down. Still, going by the headlines I'd avoid the place.
