Insurance when buying a car - how do YOU do it.

I buy the insurance to start asap after committing to buying the vehicle.

Mate of mine did this, was dead set on an e39 M5,found "The one", insured it etc, all good.....

Then he found a manual 550i e60 and decided it was far more him.

He remembered to change his insurance from the M5 to the 550i 4 days after picking up the e60..... :p:eek::D

We were both very surprised he'd not been pulled in the interim!

I recently bought a car, I as the other people have said phoned my insurance company, explained what was happening and when my new car was due for collection and asked them to keep cover on both cars for that day.

Unfortunately my car was delayed by a day as some of the work i wanted done couldnt be finished as a part had not arrived at the dealer so I had to call up and get cover on my old car extended, they did this at no charge and I exchanged a day later than planned.

Easy and quick was surprised at how good the insurance company was if I am honest.

Call and get quote, then call after purchase with reference, pay, drive. That's how it's worked twice for me.
Not sure I would try the same with Adrian flux now, they are total muppets and could make a dogs dinner out of anything :/

Bought a car at the weekend, once I'd paid for it etc and before driving off I just called my insurer and a couple of minutes later all done and drove off :)

And to be extra modern the certificate was on my online account instantly, printed it off then first stop on the way home was to get some tax.

Much better than in the olden days ;)

Do you currently have a policy that allows you to drive other cars? Test drives from private sellers might be difficult otherwise.

No, but I would just pay for day cover - I've checked with 2 of the sellers and they were happy with that as long as it was valid.

The other car I am eyeing up is at a dealer so that should be fine.

Good point though. :)

I phone up, then cry at the premium and dash all hopes of owning a decent motor :p

Not going to be a problem for me - quotes are coming back at around £600 FC with £0 voluntary excess. :)

Test driving a Z myself on Friday... hopeful to be buying. Lower budget than you mind :)

Awesome! :D

I've got some Azure blue ones 2005-2006 models lined up ready for me to spend my hard earned cash on.... If all goes well I HOPE to be a Zed owner by the end of the month if not early September.

how very slick! :D

It's been a while since I've had to do this for a car.

Managed to get a handful of competitive quotes from 1/2 a dozen insurers - so ready to go.

Whilst I know it's a little obvious, it has been a while since I've had to do this for myself, and I really appreciate everybody's helpful replies. Thank you. :)

My insurance company used to do this but won't any more. So now I have to rely on a passenger ride for a private purchase.

It is expensive, but frankly it's worth it as it's important to test the car (to me anyway).

It still requires a lot of phone calls - I've managed to knock off at least 10% just by chatting to someone on the phone instead. As good as online is, there's no beating chatting to a human being.

How much have you paid for one-day cover in the past (if you don't mind me asking)?

The cars I own and want to test drive are usually modified performance variants which insurance companies are understandably reluctant to insure me on.

The company I'm with at the moment used to let me add a prospective purchase for 24 hours but they stopped doing it about a year ago. I offered to pay for the service but still no joy.

I'm going to be test driving a few sports cars as soon as my 911 Turbo sells so I'd like to get one-day cover if I can.

I'm looking at more the £5000 sort of range, looking at imports as well as UK cars. I want black or blue which is the problem!

Have just done some insurance quotes... get the usual £4000 from most people, £1200 from Admiral... but... £500 from drivelikeagirl.

They fit one of those stupid boxes to your car... and give you £50 back if you are good for 3 months. They don't care when you drive, nor do they have any limits on speed or anything.... I don't like the idea, but I can't deny £700 is a massive saving.

(21 with a TS10, 3NCB, 1 fault and 1 non fault accident)

I'm in the £600s which is good enough for me, I do not want a black box in the car - but in your case... £700 is a lot - I'd add that £700 towards the budget of the car! :D

Bill - I just went to the current insurer I'm setting up a policy with, and they've arranged cover for when I want to test drive the car. :)

I shopped around before buying the car, decided on who to go with and told them when i'd be picking the car up and that I would phone them before I left with it to enable the insurance.

Got handed the keys, phoned the insurer, enabled the insurance, drove home. :)
