When should i take protein shakes?

that's probably the shortest distance you could actually call cardio, so long as it was sub 12 mins like you are.

I used to do 3 and 6 milers but even having proper footwear fitted it used to wreck my knee joints. Saying that I was overweight at the time I was doing that so might be different now.

They aren't a waste of money. It is impossible for me to fix my diet at the minute. I even have my missus sending me parcels of mackerel out to try and fill my requirements. Protein shakes are an easy fix for me until I get back to the UK.

This, my diet is shocking and getting no were near enough meat in my diet to fufil my protein macros. Supplementing with shakes is an easy way to make sure I'm getting what my body requires.

Though I'll admit at first I was taking them, because I was going to the gym and well you 'have to get those protienz"

To pass on a message about your recent victory over the Persians?! :D

Lol why else ;)

Next on list is an ironman and then an ultra, running is more addictive than crystal meth!

Oh and lol about all the joints comments, yes actually humans are the only species born to run endurance

Nutrition is the key to everything

That is incorrect. Humans evolved to walk long distances, and sprint short distances. This is how we stalked and hunted prey for centuries, some remote tribes are documented as doing this still today. Look at any other sport too, like boxing and tennis. They all consist of short bursts of energy. Running ultra marathons really isn't good for you. I'll see you hobbling in the street with your walking stick whilst I'm casually strolling when we're old men ;)

i would be interested to know what your actual routine is, because when i do 10K my knee's are destroyed. i mean they ache and are stiff for a few days.

also what do you eat / take in order to help the above, etc.

Correct.

Quite alarming how many young people die a year running marathons.

Humans are highly adaptable, running long distances is part of this adaptation in a lot of primitive cultures. There's this tribe in the Americas called the Tamahumara where they run a few hundred miles in a couple of days on a regular basis, women children etc included.

Also ever heard of persistence hunting? Something I would love to try one day and a legitimate hunting strategy by at least 1 african tribe, probably much more popular thousands of years ago.

I got my treadmill the other day and tested myself over 2.5km. Managed it in 12:37 with a 1% incline to simulate air resistance. Not a good time by any stretch of the imagination but could have pushed myself a little further if I was taking the Army entrance exam and just scraped the 12min 1.5mile. I was quite pleased with that considering I've been a 20 a day smoker for over a decade until recently and not run over 200m's in almost as long.

I reckon marathons are a bit too extreme but a good 5km time of around 18 is whats classed as an excellent fitness level.

Lol seriously  not many actually and all of them have died by either pre-existing hidden conditions, dodgy supplements or water intoxication. maybe get out the gym once in a while and get outside, nothing more fun than a mass participation running event, it's one of the fastest growing sports in the UK at the mo.

Also read born to run, all about running and how humans are excellent at it

Well at the moment I'm on speed sessions running for 5/10k races , mostly 4-5 miles run sessions 2 times a week, a track session of 8x800m with every 400m at race pace or do intervals, on Sundays 10 miles long slow run or off road adventure run

Come December I will be ramping up for an April Marathon, probably hit 30-35 miles a week before tapering down for the race

I eat nothing but plant based foods, high protein and reasonably carb heavy, lots of Quinoa, Soya, Tofu, veg, rice, pasta etc. I supplement with a multi vitamin, flax seed oil and veggie glucosamine

You wouldn't believe that 3 years ago I was a massive fatty at 22 stone and never run before, now I'm addicted and a skinny 6ft5 14st :)

I just knew someone would mention the Mexican tribe. They're a bad example that all running sites use.

This is an interesting article that discusses the Mexicans.

I don't buy into the idea that our ancestors ran miles to fatigue their prey. I think we'd be more or less extinct if we did that. I believe we were mostly scavengers and after we developed weapons we became stalkers of our prey.

Just looking at our physique it is clear we are more naturally developed to short sharp bursts of speed and that functional strength is something we are built better for (squatting, deadlifting, swinging, etc). I believe that endurance running is something developed this modern era and isn't something we evolved for. I don't believe ancient ancestors would have endurance ran for endless miles just for a snack. I think they would have settled for alternatives.

The fact the first every marathon runner (the story the event is named after infact) died right at the end, well that's enough for me to know I sure as hell don't wanna do it!
