Have you successfully quit smoking?

cannabis masques the damage? don't think so. I started smoking cannabis when i was 15 and never mixed with tobacco, when i was 21 started smoking cigs and those 4 years my health deteriorated big time, especially my chest. I continued to smoke cannabis throughout this period. After stopping and been about 4 years since i stopped smoking cigs now and never have any chest issues at all. Its no where near as carcinogenic, if i have a bad chest cold and smoke cannabis, it often brings it all up and clears it out. Doesn't work so well for noes colds and sometimes it can make it worse. I am not saying its a cure for severe bronchitis, just saying it helps bring up the rubbish.

When i was taking the gum, i relapsed and had a smoke, without realizing the gum is designed to make you sick when you smoke after taking it. I had a chest fit and coughed up some of my lung and that was the final nail in the cig coffin.

If I recall correctly it's just the heat from the smoke which decreases the sensitivity (not saying it causes damage, just hides damage which can be already there), as I said - it's not something I know for certain (I'll find the data).

the smoke isn't hot it cools down almost as soon as it passes your lips.

maybe if you smoke rollups without a filter the smoke is hot

Good luck to those trying to quit. It's an absolute bugger. I got horrendous anxiety when I tried to quit cold turkey.

For those that try and fail, come join us in the vapers lounge if you like the sound of ecigarettes as a reduced harm alternative.

I tried those ones you can buy in supermarkets, e-motives I think.

I presume things get a bit better if you're some sort of engineering marvel?

I've peeked into the vaping thread and it all looks hideously complicated,
It's not quitting smoking either it's just swapping one bad habit for another.

If you don't have the will power I guess it's better for you but it also gives people an option they wouldn't normally have which likely makes people who would otherwise quit all together start vapeing instead

I challenge you to find me a peer-reviewed document that states vaping is in any way a comparable bad habit when compared to smoking.

Rather than provide people with a bad habit, it provides people like me, who tried many times to quit, with a way to avoid the serious health consequences of smoking in a much cheaper and safer alternative that doesn't make them a social pariah or drain their wallet.

For anyone who was scared off by our discussion of various enthusiast mods: be not afraid! In the same way that using a computer need not involve building a custom water-cooling loop, vaping has varying levels of equipment that can be very simple, or very customised. Many of us are enthusiasts though who like to customise our gear, but we're happy to give advice to anyone who wants to see what it's about.

As above, for less than what you paid for your cig-alike, there are easy to use kits that would provide you with a better experience, save you more money, and you can choose lots of different flavours to suit your palate.

e-lites: horrible. I still think the one I tried might have been faulty in some way because it really was that bad.

10 motives: These are ok and I used them for a few months but there are too many negatives with them.

  • I'm certain they reduced the amount of liquid in each cartridge because they went from lasting 2+ days to barely lasting 1 day.
  • They went from £5.99 (for 5) to £6.99 to £7.99 in a short amount of time. Big difference to buying 1 pack for £6 to now needing 2 packs for £16
  • The quality varies quite a bit. Too many duff packs that are really weak. The good ones are actually quite nice but that's not good enough for £8 a go.
  • you don't tire of them meaning (especially after a drink) you can just keep going and going

The price difference in e-liquid to 10 motive refills is about the same as the price difference between cigarettes and 10 motives. I'm slightly surprised they allowed themselves the price of £7.99 as they are usually sold next to cigarettes which are mostly around that price or less.

Been vaping 2 years. Apparently saved thousands of pounds... And feel like a 20 year old again. No plans on quitting the vaping any time soon but I have to say times where I'm restricted from vaping, like med/long flights, I've coped infinitely better than when I was a smoker

nicotine is hardly a positive influence on the human body.
side effects include things such as increased heart rate and increased blood pressure.

switching one delivery method for another imo is still a bad habit and should be kept out of threads for people quitting smoking.

I can recommend the gum. But what i did was not follow the instructions on the box as thats too much. I got the weakest gum i could find. Then only used it sparingly and didn't keep it in my mouth for long periods as you can actually get addicted to gum. So i just put in my mouth when i was graving, sucked all the nicotine out and then spat it out. did this for about 1 week and then started to reduce my usage as much as possible. By 2 weeks i was taking them 1 every few days.

But there is no way around that first week of hell, no matter what method you take. It helped that i don't go out much as i would have struggled with it at pubs as even now when i go out and people smoke i always tend to want one, even though i know it might make me feel sick.

But as i used to smoke in my house and in my bed room and at my pc. It was difficult to get over the habit and after eating and wake up in the morning were very difficult those first few weeks. Especially when i was drinking at home.

I quit around 2 years ago but became addicted to Nicotine lozenges. I have now quit lozenges and found that more difficult to stop - I used to stuff them in my mouth one after another. Heaven knows what kind of damage can be done with Lozenges. The feeling of wanting a cig (or Loz) doesnt really go away - Once you accept that to yourself, and be honest with yourself that you dont feel you are missing out on something you really like, you will quit. Much more healthier now.

It's not in any way comparable, risk/harm considered. :D

Besides -- there's a difference between quitting smoking and quitting nicotine. The two aren't joined at the hip, necessarily.

If you're not open to the idea, then that's perfectly fine, but the social "bad habit" stigma attached to smoking is done so purely due to the damaging factors to the smoker and those around them, not to mention other things such as the smell. None of that is present with vaping, so the anti-smoking vehemence also directed towards it by virtue of jerking knees is completely misguided and unnecessary.

If someone decides to make the move, they're no longer a smoker. That's a simple fact, and attitudes need to adjust so that they're not still treated like a leper for making the effort. It still takes willpower to change the delivery method -- not everyone who picks up an e-cig of some kind immediately bins the stinkies. :)

This is a thread about quitting smoking, so vaping most certainly has a place in the discussion.

Thought I would add my now non-smoking staus to this thread.

Been 14 or 15 weeks now.

Started to cut down using Elites ecigs then switched to Skycig before giving up real cigs completeely

Feel loads better for it, can taste food much better and my room doesn't stink like an ashtray anymore.

I think I've quit smoking.

Been over two months.

Switched my lifestyle abruptly about three months ago, eating healthy, regular exercise, slowed down my drinking... It just seemed natural to phase it out.

Had an e-cigarette for a while, but wasn't too fussed by it.

Been stopped to over a year now  I used champix from the docs and it actually worked :).
Even though the Mrs smokes I managed it somehow. I honestly believed that I wouldnt be able to stop and i was quite stressed by it.

Feels good man

I still get those moments when I realise how much better i feel And I take a big breath of fresh air into my lungs and I don't have that horrible (I don't know how to describe it) smokers lungs feeling.
