Hey guys im a bit behind the times regarding SSDs lol but I was planning to get like a 500GB Samsung evo SSD and maybe a 1TB WD black HDD to accompany it for storage.

The thought was get a 500GB SSD for programs and OS then have the new HDD for storage purposes. But I see ppl going even smaller on SSDs for OS only what is the advantages/disadvantages of doing either setup and what do u guys recommend?

High capacity SSD and high capacity HDD
or
Low capacity SSD and High capacity HDD

I tend to use a 120gb ~ for Windows and most common used programs then a mechanical drive for everything else. Whether you look at 1tb or 2tb.

Are you sure they dont go for smaller SSDs due to their budget?
If you can afford to go higher, go higher, it doesnt make sense to just run a OS on a SSD and run programs on an HDD.
Whole heartedly a supporter for High capacity SSD and high capacity HDD

What exactly are you using your rig for?
If youre a gamer, go with atleast a 250gb ssd and a 1 or 2 tb hard drive. 120gb may do but youll find it may fill fast with a large collection.
If youre a general user, then stick with a 120gb ssd and 2 or 3 tb hdd.

Will the 120gb be fine for someone who tends to have a large collection but only has say 5-10 games installed at a time at the most?

Also should I get the EVO or pay the extra for the PRO (I think it on the this week only deal as well)

O/S + 10 games is still going to be too much to stick on a 128GB drive IMO (assuming we're talking AAA titles and not things like Gunpoint, Hotline Miami etc)

I had a Crucial m4 128GB SSD as a Steam drive but it was getting full pretty quickly, even with just games I was actually playing through at the time.

Now that is my Windows 8 drive and I bought a 250GB Samsung Evo SSD as my new Steam drive.

Also have a 3TB hard drive for storage.

5 games should be fine. But if they are AAA titles, then id look at a 250. BF3 takes up around 40GB i believe so for 10 games, it wont cut it.

Look at some benches and reviews I guess. I have the Pro and I am familiar with the non-pro but have no actual knowledge of how the EVO performs. If the Pro isnt too far off the price of an EVO then go with the PRO. Excellent performer, but im led to believe that between the two, theres not much difference.

I've been thinking about popping a small SSD into my current rig, just for windows and apps etc.

How easy is it to install? Just a case of putting it in and formatting my old one, then installing windows onto the SSD?

(Sorry for hijacking the thread!)

Pop in the SSD and install windows onto it. No need to format your old drive, just delete the windows installation off of it.
Obviously you can search through the HDD and take stuff you want to keep and then delete the windows folder. If you dont have anything valuable, then just format it.

Great, sounds simple enough, thanks WuMyster.
