Are there any advantages, other than it taking only one slot, of the 7990 over the 7970 Crossfire (in this instance, 2x7970 MSI Twin Frozr)?

As someone pointed out in a previous thread, the 7990 is effectivley 2 7970's. At the current price you're looking at £250 per 7970.

You should also be aware that they can run seriously hot. Some of the owners in the 7990 owners thread are reporting temps of 91, so serious case cooling would be advised.

Personally, I'd look at getting the MSI 7970 for xFire. I have one on order and cannot wait. :D

I'm thinking the 7970 CF (or 7950 CF) might be better in the long run, but wondered if I was missing out on anything by not getting a 7990.

I think you'll only be happy once you've moved that 670 on from your sig and have yourself a 7990. Just make sure you've got a good side exhaust on your case to remove the heat it puts out. Otherwise grab 2x7950, clock them to 1100/1500 and enjoy 7990 stock performance at a fraction of the price.

+1
Price/performance ratio is trough the roof with those.

If you plan to water cool at all then an obvious advantage of the 7990 is that you are only spending on a single block whereas with a 7970CF you would have to shell out for 2 (plus 2 backplates).
