Isn't that the strategy that Arsene has been following for the past 6 years? Buying potential that (usually) turns out to be overpriced, injury prone foreign rubbish? It's about time that Arsenal bought world class players and paid what they're worth. If it's true that they never actually submitted a bid for Higuain then that's a shoicking situation to be in. If they knew he was available AND he'd consider a move to Arsenal they should have moved heaven and earth to get him to the club. Giroud has potential but seems to have the usual Arsenal issue of not being clinical enough.
It is also very telling that RVP hasn't had a serious injury at Man Utd when he was much more injury prone, as are most of the squad it seems, at Arsenal.
Yes, which is again why I don't trust Wenger to do it, there are plenty of stunningly good deals out there, Arsenal will not improve dramatically with one buy, its simply no where near enough. If we want to win this qualifier and stay in the champs league and play in 4 separate competitions, one player isn't going to cut it. Another manager who hasn't lost his eye for a player can go out and buy a bunch of good players, Wenger used to be able to do it, Wenger CAN'T do it any more.
First choice would have been sack Wenger, hire a manager end of last season so he had all summer to watch tape, scout players, find deals and get them done early. Second choice is fire Wenger now, give the new guy some slack because he can't get good business done by the end of the window and Wenger would have left him a terrible squad(for competition in four competitions and for top four in the league). Third choice is Wenger finishes up his final season but doesn't spend the money as he'll just waste it.
Last choice is Wenger spends but doesn't waste all our money, and all the next managers rebuilding budget on a single high profile, massively overpriced, won't make much of a difference player.
Overpaying on Rooney or Suarez would just screw us so completely as it would stop us being able to strengthen the squad where its needed. Defence, DM and wingers we are weaker in than striker, considering Podolski, Walcott at a push and even Bendtner could play upfront. Basically I still just don't trust Wenger to do the right things so I've stopped really caring, I'm basically waiting for the day we get rid of Wenger and get in a manager who won't constantly make the same mistakes over and over.
AVB went in, tried to outmuscle the players at Chelsea, lost support, lost respect, did poorly, lost his job. So he went to Spurs and tried something different... yes Wenger, when something doesn't work you can try something different, not just repeat the same mistakes over and over and over.
The thing that worries me is the idea of him being pushed into the board room or into a director role. We need him, his influence, his incredibly dated ideas and terrible eye for a player removed from the club for good now.
Wenger is stubborn, can't adapt, his style worked brilliantly for several years, then everyone else changed and Wenger didn't and he was left behind.
