Best bang for your buck if you're going 1440p

I have no problem running games on high settings with just an overclocked 7950 @ 1440p.

I don't bother with AA as it really isn't needed at this res, unless you sit with your nose right against the screen.

I tend to use it providing it keeps the game smooth and the frames no lower than say 40 fps. I do agree though that aa is not really needed and often some form of FXAA or AMD's MLAA will more than suffice.

I like my AA and i like 60fps constant, every example given is with compromise and i dont do FXAA or MLAA, 4xAA is a minimum for me.
There are just plenty of people who are accustomed to not having 60fps constant and going without AA so it normal for them .

If you can feel a difference of 3 fps you're either superhuman or something else is factoring in.

Far from that mate; you only look at the FPS and consider the situation solved. At a caped FPS (59 for instance), the render times are all pretty much the same. The action on screens flows naturally without any stutter. As soon as it drops out of that "sync state", you'll feel it. Again, it's not about raw FPS only, it's about render times, input lag and so on.

As an example, 40FPS+ on my old 6970 Ultra settings, in BF 3 was a stuttery mess, totally unplayable.

I also fell it immediately, its because we are used to it being constant and at a particular level it becomes very noticeable to us.

Indeed.

Don't believe a word of it tbh, even on my 144hz monitor in older games like CSS if I cap it to 144hz and it drops below a few fps it doesn't feel any different. I also used to do it on my 60hz monitor, you must have some special eyes buddy.

I have been playing at 2560x1600 since 2006 the jaggles are still noticeable to me and its a case of each to there own as what's noticeable to each individual at these resolutions.

We were talking about 60fps and bellow, the higher up the fps scale you go the less noticeable it gets, so of course you wont notice the difference.
You went full apples to oranges there.

Did you read my full post? I used to do it on my 60hz monitor as well and still didn't notice a difference unless it started dropping into the 30's.

You are less sensitive, we are not robots coming off the assembly line and because you dont notice so others wont either.

I can notice it when i use a fps cap and it drops below i will admit but as long as it remains smooth then it doesn't bother me. I don't fret on maintaining 60 fps and just enjoy the experience. If it frame rate drops and it becomes stuttery then i will drop details. I find it doesn't need to be locked at 60fps all the time to remain smooth though.

Strange that then as my sensitivity going from 60hz to 144hz was massive whereas others say they notice hardly any difference.

Point being I bet without an fps counter you couldn't tell the difference between 59 and 56fps.

With the Xbox you could set DOA to 60FPS or 50FPS, i was messing around with the settings just before i went to work and when i got home i started DOA and even just looking at the demonstration screen i noticed something was not quite right, by mistake i had set it to 50fps, i noticed the difference right off the bat.

Yes i notice without a fps counter because the only time i use a fps counter is when i feel something is not right.

+1 (I have been running with just the one 7950 for 6+ months and have not yet felt the need to add a 2nd card ; although when moving to a water set up recently the thought was at the back of my mind :) )

I am sure that for some it may be unacceptably jaggy/jerky with only one but not at the momemt for me - then again this could be because my eyesight might be poorer than it used to be :(

n.b. You can always buy a second if you find that one is not enough :)

There is no need to go SLI or crossfire. One high end card will be more than enough.
One high end card won't be more than enough, it won't even be enough or nearly enough. If you want the eye candy all turned up to 11 you'll definitely need 2 cards. 7950's xfire is by far and away the best bang for buck right now and way better than Titan/780 in terms of value.

games that will drop below 60 fps at 1080p even on highest of cards

just cause 2, bf3, metro last light, arma 2, arma 3, tomb raider, theHunter, crysis 3 ,

just a few there.

whether you feel it or see it with your eyes if you used to playing with a min of 60 you do notice small drops or feel them. some people are happy to play at 30 fps min. im not :D
