Hello everyone, hoping someone could provide some insight into a proposed build, scandalously, I havn't upgraded in about 4/5 years, my 8800gts finally packed in a year ago and this is me finally getting round to getting a new rig.

Already got peripherals etc, using an Antec900, assuming I can just swap out most of the hardware. Skipped on the 16gb RAM because it's out of stock, can always add more later (works out at around £20 more expensive but hey).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3330 3.00GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £149.99
1 x KFA2 GeForce GTX 650Ti EX OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £101.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £82.99
1 x Kingston 120GB SSDNow V300 Drive SATA 6Gb/s 3 2.5" (7mm height) Solid State Hard Drive - (SV300S37A/120G) £76.99
1 x XFX Pro 850W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £74.99
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU) £53.99
1 x Akasa SSD & HDD adapter 2.5" - AK-HDA-03 £2.99
Total : £555.92 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Rusty as hell with speccing and stuff, any input is appriciated, used ocuk for like 5+ years and I trust y'alls judgement!

Cheers!

The PSU is about twice as much as you need for starters. :p

Give me a minute to throw something together. :)

Gave it a quick go. :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x VTX3D HD 7870 Black Boost Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £161.99 (Tahiti LE design - Overclock to match HD7950)
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £89.99 (weaker than the i5 you specced, but still a strong CPU and frees up more money for the GPU)
1 x Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650M High Performance 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020039-UK) £86.99 (Picked modular because there are no cable management features in the Antec 900.)
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £86.99 (Samsung make some of the best SSD's out there, OcUK's favourites. ;))
1 x Asus M5A97 AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £77.99 (havent got a clue about AM3+ boards but this one seems alright. Perhaps another member could shed some light?)
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £53.99

Total : £572.92 (includes shipping : £10.00).

The Asus 970 EVO 2 board's a lot better - overclocks really high and works well with the 8320/8350 too :)

(The first board is absolutely fine if it'll be run at stock or near to stock, and saves a bit too)

Ok so my spec with doomedspeed's choice of PSU and teppic's choice of board. :)

if I were you I would get rid of the case too. the 900's are awful bloody things. there is nowhere to hide wires and the way the HDD's are fitted is unforgivably cack handed.

You've not said if your budget is fixed, but if you can stretch a bit then this is good "bang for buck":

I don't see the point of the SSD bay, I'd just use those little double sided sticky foam pads if you have any, or similar. Though at £3 they are cheap enough :)

The MSI 7950 at £176 is a great option. It won't be any noisier really than the 7870 LE, I'd go for it if the budget allows.

The noise on that single fan MSI is said to be pretty loud, so I'd avoid if it noise is an issue (it would be to me). I think the Twin Frozr is worth the extra to be honest.

Good find on the b-grade. That's a brilliant system for £600.

It isn't a good find actually thinking about it, the new new one with 3 yr warranty and a load of free games is only £10 more. Get the new one OP. :p

Wow, thanks for so many responses guys;

I suppose on instinct I tend to go nvidia because they've served me well in the past, but the MSI card has a 3 year warranty which is sweet. I quite like acme's build, trying to collate all the information you've posted, ready to take my first foray into AMD/ATI, gotta take advantage of the price points, probably going to sack the SSD for a month or two to cut costs, unfortunately need to buy Win7 too.

A thousand thank yous to all contributors = )
