Doesn't the new Shimano system put the hydraulic reservoir in the shifter where the mechanical gubbins normally is and uses the electronic groupset. Sounds pretty cool/expensive!

Specifically I'd like hydraulic discs. I've had mechanical ones and was unimpressed. I'd be happy with hybrid ones actually.

I hate my mechanical ones almost always rubbing on the damn disks and have to fiddle with them every ride.
I'm sure the rubbing doesn't make much difference because the disks don't get hot like when I brake but it still seems like I'm wasting energy and it gives me a nocebo effect when I'm going up hills

Yep, i think SRAM has something similar for mechanical groupsets but i'm not sure if either are officially released yet.

I'm slowly coming to the realisation that the fit guy was right. I do need a longer bike. Both my bikes are fine for being in a chilling out position or when climbing hills but I've got no chance of getting properly aero.

New bike time?

Edit: He did suggest Planet X for exactly the reason you said, they're longer and racier.

150mm stem like a boss?

More consistent braking and better modulation at all times. Also, as there is no rim wear your wheels will last much longer and be much lighter where it makes a difference.

For long descents there is no rim heating and so you won't blow the tyre off.

In addition to the aero thing this has to be the next development bike-wise. The only thing really holding it back is that the UCI aren't keen, apparently on the (understandable) basis that a super hot disc is not something you want coming into contact with your leg after a crash. Could be lethal.

Adding a bit of weight with disc brakes is probably a bonus with most bikes struggling to make the 6.8kg limit without the addition of fishing weights.

And arknor, grow up a bit! It's a bit off bitching about people in this thread and then asking for help. To answer your question though, loosen the two stem bolts and tighten the top cap then tighten the stem bolts back up. If it's still got play then your headset is buggered.

The problem with most mechanical brakes is that only 1 piston moves to brake. So the other piston should be set as close to the disc as possible and that means that any slight wobble in the disc will rub.

Volagi's video on How to adjust BB7 discs is a pretty good how to:

One regular poster on BR is adamant that rubbing can be avoided using this video.

However, same as you the constant rubbing used to annoy me. Unfortunately with mechanicals one pad is fixed and so it's inherent to the system.

afaik nothing you can do about it, so just ignore it.. :) one reason i wouldn't buy a bike with mechanical disk brakes.. i don't like the way hydraulic ones feel but i'd get that over mechanical set any time of the day

I've got hydraulic disc brakes on my mountain bike
feel good

Heh, I saw my mistake the same day, but nobody called me on it so thought I was safe. Damn you OMS :(

Haha, sorry, just saw it as I was reviewing the flapjack incident.

Lampre-Merida, proud holders of the most garish kit in the peloton and worst cycling advert on TV (Filippo Pozzato's paedo smile) awards.

I have mental health issues and learning disabilities although it does not hold me back job wise socially I am a bit of a recluse and some people on here seem to like trying to take advantage of the way my brain works.

one of the comments struck a raw nerve with me which is why I left.
anyway thank you for answering my question.

I'll likely keep up with the thread but refrain from getting involved too much unless I have something worth saying or I think you guys wouldn't mind answering one of my noobie questions

Just either ignore it or report it to a mod if you think it's out of order, there's no need to get so frustrated. I'm one to talk though - I asked to be banned from one of the sub-forums here because I found it so aggravating. :p

And ask whatever questions you have, this thread is generally really helpful and not nearly as cliquey as some of the other SA threads! Chances are at least one person has had the same problem at some point and can help you out.

And the mental United fans have run more loose ever since , us sane MU fans are dwindling. This transfer window and change of manager have made me almost do the same at some points.

I looking in to cycling to work, only a few road miles each way, but I don't really know what I should be looking for in a bike.

What would you guys say, as a beginner, I need?
I'm not planning on racing or anything like that, just the work commute.
