Opinions on new MacBook Air

Sent an email round work and think I've found a buyer of my 2010 MBP! So once that's been sealed, will get myself a new MBA I think. 13" and 4GB/128GB version should do nicely.

....and my current experiences explain why you shouldn't risk messing around with edu store discount.

I ordered some stuff off OCUK at the same time as placing my MBA order. For some reason, my bank got scared by OCUK and put a block on my card. Apple have only been able to take part payment and now my order is stuck in limbo with me doing call relays between my card company and Apple.

Would you want to do this if you had fraudulently used the edu store? I doubt it.

You're going to jail.

If you don't make large purchases often this is normal. What you can and should do is call your bank ahead to let them know so they're system doesn't flag up 'suspicious' spending and block the payment.

Easy to resolve though and shouldn't take more than 2 phone calls:
- Call bank, tell them they're legit purchases and they will unblock it.
- Call Apple, request they retry repayment for the remaining amount.

Realistic worst case scenario Apple unlikely ask you to provide proof you are a student and you hang up then never here anything again from it.

dMy bank blocked payment for my MBA, just phoned me to check it was legit and they unblocked the card. Apple took the payment the following day. That was using the Higher Education discount, no proof asked at any point.

I've used the discount multiple times in the past on previous MBP and Thunderbolt monitor, never been asked to confirm validity of the discount (missus works at a university if they did).

You don't need to phone Apple, they will try to take the payment for 5 or 6 continuous days after the initial payment fails. If they don't take the payment during those 5 or 6 retries the order is put on hold/cancelled. Or you could just cancel the Apple order and reorder, you can cancel it until the item is being dispatched can't you?

My bank blocked my apple payment yesterday, the first time it's ever happened!

The bank rang me and I authorised it, I then logged into my order status and told it to re-authorise my card, my MBA is now preparing for dispatch :)

Can someone explain what 'Turbo Boost' is on the new MBAs? Seen that the 13" i5 will 'Turbo Boost up to 2.6GHz'.

The 1.3GHz speed is the minimum clock speed. When required, the clock speed will be risen (up to 2.6GHz on a single core, 2.3GHz if both cores are in use IIRC) for performance.

Question for both i5 and i7 owners - in addition to my previous question about VMs (what is performance and battery life like?), how is battery life with Skype? As well as fan speeds?

Thanks :)

General use, the fan is silent with the i7. Can be a bit louder when playing games though, and its gets warm. Quite impressive tbh :)

I've been playing LoL on my 2011 MBP with an Intel HD 3000 GPU and with most settings on low I easily get 40-60 FPS.

The new MBA GPU is nearly twice as fast so running it well shouldn't be a problem. I think it's one of the better running games on Mac if you ask me.

Does anyone else have any experiences of playing games on this MBA? I've read the mac client for LoL is a bit hit and miss so would use windows for that but what about games like Diablo 3, Starcraft etc?

Not looking for amazing graphics and mega framerates, just looking for comfortable performance

Rome total war is the most intensive I have, and it runs that no bother at max res. Details aren't turned that far up, but runs very comfortably. Does get a bit warm, and the fan starts.

Minecraft is the other game, and it runs that on my settings without getting very warm at all, and is mostly silent.

Love the new mba. Just one problem, it runs wow at 70-90fps on average settings but the laptop gets soooo hot and fans kick in after about 10min. How can i prevent this?

Out of curiosity, which spec do you have? WoW is probably the only game I would play on it. Planning on getting the low end 13" model.

I have the low end 13". It runs fine and smooth just overheats and fans kick in.

It doesn't overheat. If it were overheating, it would shut down.

There is nothing you can do, as it is going to get hot. You're running an intensive task.

This whole overheating/running hot/burning/i5 vs. i7 heat thing is ridiculous.

It has shut down twice. There is a massive patch update which is meant to solve this. 5.3

I have found the first bad point about the MBA - and it's an OSX issue. I can't read iBooks that I purchased. Until Mavericks there is no iBooks App - the books that I want to read aren't really tablet friendly and I want to have them open whilst I use my external display but noooo can't do that!

Argh so frustrating. Any decent apps to read ePub files?

Has anyone installed windows on thier '13 MBA? From a brief look online it seems that there may be issues installing it using bootcamp. I think I'd need it to play LoL since the OSX version is very buggy.

I've been playing LoL for a few months on OSX and never had any issues. Only thing that annoys me is hot corners seem to decide to work sometimes so I end up flicking in and out of the game which is annoying!

Is that on an MBA or on something with a bit more grunt?

Reading about it and using it are completely different things. I've not seen any bugs or glitches myself whilst using it, people with problems will always be more vocal than those who don't.

If you set everything to low the framerate will be super smooth.
