Spec for upcoming first build. Opinions appreciated!

There is nothing wrong with buying a used CPU/mobo/RAM, but it needs to be worth buying used. At those prices I'd say it's not.

I hear ya dude. It's cause it'll be my first build so every little thing makes me question everything haha that AMD CPU/Asus mobo combo you suggested is looking very appealing though. I didn't realise how problematic it was finding compatible parts to work with the i7-920. Would my GPU work with that AMD set-up?

The GPU would work fine with the AMD build, the 580 is decent for the money, though it is quite power hungry.

The i7 920 is a first generation i7, we are now on the 4th generation, so mobo's will be difficult to find new and lacking things like SATA III and USB 3.0.

What's your max budget to build your rig and we can try and spec something to include any of the used parts that are suitable.

Ah nice one. The GPU is a used part but it's barely used. My friend upgraded to the 580 then not long after decided he wanted a new build altogether and got all new parts

If your mate will take £130 for the Cpu, mobo and ram, then it would be worth it.

Idleman's spec is nice, assuming OCUK will flash the BIOS for free, thought probably better to get the CAS9 RAM at a few pounds more.

The AMD spec is also decent for the money and will overclock well with the cooler that is also within the budget.

For new upcoming games the AMD may perform better, but for older games and MMORPG's the i5 is better.
