Bradley Manning - 35yrs in the slammer :(

Bradley though deliberately went out of his way to reveal things he shouldn't have, which brought international embarassment, and shame on the USA Government didn't it?

I don't think he appreciated the seriousness of what he was doing.

I'm surpised he got off with a prison sentence tbh. Most other people seem who intend to expose the government tend to die in bizarre circumstances.

day ain't over yet .........

Raging....

I'm not raging, your attempts at trolling are humorous though.

I'd say that revealing information was in itself going out of your way, doesn't make it a bad thing though, nor should embarrassing or shaming your country for it's illegal actions be considered a bad thing.

He's have probably stood a much better chance of "getting off" or getting any aympathy if he had edited the documents and what was leaked before hand, the vast, vast majoirty of what was released was of no interest other then being to embarrass the US. had he simply released information about wrong doing, he may have carried enough sympathy to get somewhere and actually achieve something, but it appears as if he just compiled a load of stuff and then just dumped off all the info.

I don't think he can have expected to get away with it, if he did he would have just run to the nearest south american country with no extradition treaty with the US and gone to ground, I think he was genuinely misguided enough to believe he was a whistle blower, without actually taking the time to release only information that highlighted wrong doing rather than just some US diplomatic staff are muppets of the highest order.

He did it all wrong and thus deserves what he got, all he did was create large amounts of embarrassment to the US government and put lives at risk, and in all this any bit of good some of the information could have done was lost behind the utter drivel that was released.

I think you're naive if you think him being sentenced had anything to do with "putting lives at risk".

He got sentenced for releasing classified government secret documents. I've signed a very similar bit of paper that he would have saying I'd receive prison sentence if I did the same.

should have hung the little nerd.

The age of the lynch mob is over. They've have had him out of jail and swinging from the nearest tree long before all of this. Would have saved an awful lot on trees and lawyers.

In an ideal world the government wouldn't need to have secrets. But that isn't the world we live in. He got what he deserved.
:(
Do you know the difference between a state keeping something secret because it protects the country, and one that keeps a secret in order to protect itself?

Well they couldn't give him a slap on the backside could they... Would just leave the door open for other heroes to expose their other terrible secrets and they wouldn't be wanting that !

At least he can go to prison knowing that he's done something good for the world . Even if he has only done enough to stop one civilian being killed or one prisoner being tortured.

I am also SC but this case is a little different, Bradley showed the world the US Government were acting illegally and he couldn't standby and watch so he decided to expose the whole corrupt system.

I can't believe I share the same forum as some of the people commenting on here. The way you're going on makes this guy sound worse than Hitler!

I'm not going to comment on the specifics of the leaks in this case (because I don't really know much about them), but in general I think the ability for leaks to happen forces accountability on governments, which is a good thing. I know it's "cool" to say that Wikileaks hasn't made a positive impact, but I think it has. Listen to yesterdays 1700 'PM' show (Radio 4) for some examples.

Make sure you know/accept the potential consequences before committing a crime i suppose.

I have nothing more to really comment on this, as said, he's broken the law and now has to pay for it. I have a severe lack of empathy for him.

He was more the SC though, he was at least TS as he was an intelligence analyst, he would have access to a lot higher levels of information. He didn't release just information what would expose any government wrongdoings, he exposed a lot of information indiscriminately, which could post risk to both soldiers and civilians alike.

We have such backwards laws where they benefit the few at the cost of the plenty.

They did what they did because the government was (in their opinion) crossing the line. At what point do you stop and think "This is too far", when you are in a position that can make a difference.

He has brought scrutiny to the US government, when world + dog they need some reflection on a lot of things they've done in the public eyes, and more so out of the public eye.

He'll just become a martyr, if I was in the position and thought my government was crossing the line, I would probably do the same.
