The C24s better than say the P-X 52mm carbons (£200 cheaper)?

I haven't ridden any of those wheels, but I thought you wanted climbing wheels? The PX 52mm deep sections are heavier.

That said, my Cosmic Carbones weigh a claimed 1760g and I'm not sure losing 2-300g would make any difference. It's all about the engine! I feel I climb just as well I on my 9.5kg alu Cinelli with 2kg wheels as I do on the carbon Rose.

Well, I had an experience with a semi-pro rider yesterday, only for 5miles-ish over 30mile loop.

http://www.strava.com/activities/77949610

I pushed myself to get an average speed of 18-20mph after 2miles of warm up, working hard for about 15-18miles, thinking I'll then work at a slower steady pace on the last 8 miles then 2 miles of cool down.

A semi pro then cycled right next to me around my 20 miles mark, started having a conversation with me like it's just another leisure ride to him whilst I struggled to keep up with him (and chatting for that matter). He's just finished about 3 hours of riding and is on his way to the 6pm local chain gang.

Great that he kept my pace up after I pushed 20miles, was also quite good motivation. Immediately after he pulled off to head to the chain gang and me, heading home, my average speed slumped. Completely boinked!

Definitely a lot more training required before I even contemplate joining my local club/chain gang. Bunch of hardcores!

Has anyone done 150mi in one ride before? I think I've got everything covered but I just wonder if there is something glaring I haven't considered. It should be fine, it's just a century + a half century :D

Route is sorted
Clothing is sorted
Food is sorted
Lights fitted in case it gets dark
Drink I can only carry 1L but I expect for a 10-12h ride I'll need to refill somehow
I need to bring a backpack which isn't ideal but it shouldn't be too heavy.

Will have 2 spare tubes, puncture kit, pump, mini tool, mobile phone and driving licence in case they need to ID my corpse.:D

I done a 148 mile ride in May biggest ride before that was 80 miles, all I took out was phone, some cake and gels, some energy drink sachets and some money, stopped off at a shop about 80 miles in had some lunch and restocked. If you can avoid the bag definitely do. As others have said too pubs will normally refill or just look for some shops to buy a big water.

Best way to train for the chain gang is to join the chain gang. You will get dropped again and again, but it will be later and later each time.

I don't think you can replicate the motivation required to improve as quickly any other way.

Chain Gangs are generally pretty brutal. Ours is slightly different, we do an APR, so there are slower groups. The first group will do around 19-20mph, the fastest group will average 24/25mph and if you get dropped or puncture, you're on your own. Everybody knows this, so there is no moaning about being left behind.

Normal club rides are nothing like that though. Nobody ever gets left behind on a club run, the speed will be adjusted if people are struggling. The group will stop to regroup at the top of hills and if anybody has a mechanical, etc.
We do introductory runs as well, which are done on Monday nights, so there are people who have been racing over the weekend out for a recovery ride and new people who are getting used to group riding.

Here are some stats of the last 3 introductory runs i'v been on:
19.7 miles @ 15.8mph avg
33.4miles @ 14.6mph avg
32.4miles @ 15.5mph avg
Dont be put off by the fast chaingangs, join a club and go out on the normal club runs and build up to doing the chaingangs.

This is true, depending on how much group riding you've done before.

Chaingang is not the best place for learning to ride in a group, but it is great for improving your speed.

Yeah, I've heard the red was a better copy... Still very happy with the bike for £300.

I don't know how decathlon decide to name their bikes, but the black T5 is actually the current model of the red T3, with the new T7 being the current model of last years T5.

The white T3 is designed to come in under the old T3. Decathlon also took the oppurtunity to sell everything at a slightly higher price, which is probably why they changed around all the numbers.

So the white T3 isn't really a worse version of the red T3, and was meant to be a lower model, decathlon just decided not to call it a T1. Still a nice bike, you should get onto the triban owners club :D

15mph averages for an introductory run, how fast are the club runs then? I definately need to get a few months of cycling in before joining a club I reckon, think my averages are around 13mph at the moment.

its the price that plays the part here.. red is 299 white is 299 so lower end or not its well.. less for the same?

I heard from a work colleague his mate who was riding with that chain gang started with a big lot ended the night with only 5 finishing!

Aye. He did mention a secondary group that starts off at 6:30pm, so I will look into doing that, see if I fit in and if it makes a difference in motivating me to go faster / further.

Doesnt the new Triban5 have the new 9speed Sora drivetrain? (or was that the old one?)

The old red triban 3 and the new white triban 3 are both 8speed.

It does, same frame as the red T3 but better groupset. Also doesn't have the thumb shifters. Quite a few people with the red T3 upgraded to Sora.

Whether it is worth over £100 more for a better group set or not I don't know, haven't used 2300.

old had sora too.. :) triban 3 is discontinued, they are shipping the last ones out of the factory.. the 3A(white) is the replacement for RED..

this CX -;

looks like an epic value for money imo.. how many CX bikes with 105 groupo can you get for £800?

Old sora was 8 speed with thumb shifters though.

Genesis Croix de Fer is worth a look as well if you want a CX bike.
For £720 you can get it with disc brakes and Sora groupset.
