looks like an epic value for money imo.. how many CX bikes with 105 groupo can you get for £800?

uurg, tempting ..

I was just going to ask something about a CX bike

I am "still" looking for a specialized tricross 2nd hand, and I noticed some people upgrade the brakes because of a juddering issue? one advert said something like frog brakes? any ideas what this is?

prices of these go anywhere from 400 up for the basic "£750" Tiagra set..

Chain Gangs are generally pretty brutal. Ours is slightly different, we do an APR, so there are slower groups. The first group will do around 19-20mph, the fastest group will average 24/25mph and if you get dropped or puncture, you're on your own. Everybody knows this, so there is no moaning about being left behind.

Normal club rides are nothing like that though. Nobody ever gets left behind on a club run, the speed will be adjusted if people are struggling. The group will stop to regroup at the top of hills and if anybody has a mechanical, etc.
We do introductory runs as well, which are done on Monday nights, so there are people who have been racing over the weekend out for a recovery ride and new people who are getting used to group riding.

Here are some stats of the last 3 introductory runs i'v been on:
19.7 miles @ 15.8mph avg
33.4miles @ 14.6mph avg
32.4miles @ 15.5mph avg
Dont be put off by the fast chaingangs, join a club and go out on the normal club runs and build up to doing the chaingangs.

This is a common issue with cantilever brakes, so most CX bikes have the same problems.
Basically, because the cable stop for the front brake is attached above the headset, any backwards flex in the fork will increase the tension in the cable, which then applies more force to the rim, flexes the fork more, increases, tension....etc etc etc until the pads slip on the rim and the process starts again.

Apparently having a larger yoke helps with this (the triangular metal bit at the top of this image)

thanks
so a cheap fix then? ie don't need to change the cable?

I'd guess so (although changing the cable would be cheap?).
I have disc brakes on my CX so i have no experience of this, so dont know how effective the fixes are.

Our Saturday morning "club" rides usually average about 16mph. That's plenty for me at the moment. I can manage faster on a flat route, and maybe I'll be a bit faster with a better bike. I'm improving, but it'll be a while before I can average something like 18mph and take in the climbs we do.

You can also use a fork mounted cable hanger to improve things.

TBH though it only changes the braking with cantis from scary juddery to scary. I moved to mini-vs as they don't judder, they apply more force more consistently and you can mount them on the canti pegs.

RS80 C24s can be had for £300ish. You sure the PX are £200 cheaper?

Ah not seen the RS80, just the C24s were almost £700. What's the difference between those and the RS80s?

Hmm the RS80s look an absolute steal at £330, but then the Dura Ace C24s look a damned good price at £600. Arg.

And Hurrah! I made it home safely!

Today was a success. My times were slow, but I am a lazy, unfit couch potato, so its just a start!
The time it took is irrelevant at this stage, what matters is that you're out on your bike. The crucial thing is to stick to it, and not let the onset of Autumn put you off :)

Think the only difference is the hubs (Dura Ace vs Ultegra) which I doubt is noticeable.
