Are there any pitfalls in swapping wheels between bikes, assuming that the cassette is compatible with the derailer on both bikes? I'm thinking of getting something like Racing 7s to use during the winter, and it'd be nice to be able to use them on both the VN Yukon and the Aquilo.

I swap wheels and cassettes between 10sp/11sp atm. Might need a quick barrel adjustment but it's pretty much a straight swap. From my limited experience you'll get better mileage between same make wheels though ie

Ti - Fulcrum 7's & C24's - requires barrel adjustment.
R5 - C24s and C50s is a straight swap.

Assuming both your chains are in good condition, then no.

Ensuring the tyres fit between the stays and that the cassette is still within tolerance for the chain length. I swap 25t and 26t cassettes but I wouldn't got 25t to 28t.

No issues at all provided cassette is broadly the same ratio.

Is there much difference between 23/25/28mm tyres (apart from the height)

I presume 28mm rolls a bit slower but has more surface area grip? Sorry for noobish question - just got my CAAD8 10 days ago and getting to "grips" with road terms rather than mtb terms!

25mm tyres are the best balance wise between weight/grip/rolling resistance.. actually I read somewhere that 23mm are slower but you won't notice that..

Main difference between 23/25 is 25mm tyres require less pressure so perceived comfort is greater than 23mm's they should be pretty similar rolling resistance and 28's pretty much as you presume.

Previously most people used 23mm tyres because they're the lightest.

This year on the Tour, riders were split between 25 and 23 tyres. This is because they can roll faster because they skip less over bumps. They are also more comfortable.

I'd recommend 25mm tyres.

Interestingly the trend is also to wider rims. Traditionally rim width has been 19mm but now a lot of rims are coming in 23mm, 25mm. This changes the profile of the tyre on the wheel and in my experience a 23mm tyre on a 23mm rim has a width much more like a 25mm tyre on a 23mm rim. I think Asprilla has mostly archetype rims at 23mm so maybe he will attest to this.

I ran 25s last year but on my 23mm rims I am on 23s and notice no difference. 23 are cheaper, lighter and tend to come in more colours if thats of any use.

Thanks for the rapid replies. I'll probably stick with 11-28t cassettes all around, and both frames should have clearance for 25mm tyres, so I should be okay on those fronts. The new bike has a FFWD F6R-C wheelset, and the old bike has a Mavic Ksyrium Elites. If I have the same 10 speed 11-28t cassette on all three wheelsets, will I be okay to interchange the wheels freely?

What effect would a worn chain have? Would it wear the cassette more quickly, or would it cause problems with shifting?

Thanks for info,

Got 23mm's on the CAAD8 as it;s just new - not going to change them just now will keep them and use them as they are. Just feels like rattling bones just now coming from mtb's with fat tyres and suspension.

Anyway - 50 miles in 1st week is a good start. Good run on Tuesday night despite the wind in my face the whole way!!

Archetypes, TB14s, ADHCs and a23s. All 23mm wide rims.

Any evidence I have to offer is purely anecdotal, but I think that running 25mm tyres on 23mm rims at lower pressures offers the best combination of comfort and rolling resistance for any given rim and tyre combination.

Comfort itself will also be influenced by the choice of rim, number of spokes and the flexibility of the tyre. For instance a 32 spoke Archetype with a 320tpi 25mm Vittoria Open Pave isn't as comfortable as a 32 spoke TB14 with a Conti GP 4 Seasons on it.

Don't expect more comfort and lower rolling resistance just because a tyre is 25mm or a rim 23mm, you need to select components that are aimed at what you want to achieve.

A worn chain will have stretched both the links and worn the teeth on the cassette in a fashion unique to its stretched shape, so won't fit onto a newer cassette as well affecting shifting.

Also, remember that the rims might be different widths are the brake track so you might need to give the barrel adjuster on your callipers a quick twist too.
