4930K benchys early look. Conclusion.. Meh.

We've already seen some noticeable frame rate improvement in games with higher than 1600MHz speed memory with the Haswell CPUs due to the improved memory controller, I wonder what kind of performance difference would it make, if Haswell-E got a even better memory controller, and combine with the use of DDR4 memory...:p

Yeah Haswell -E will come with high speed DDR4 support. Would expect soldered tim, 4,6 or 8 cores for desktop with a decent amount of cache, along with being produced on a very mature process. It would be fair to say Haswell -E is going to be a monster :)

Rumor is Intel is releasing a separate chipset for new 14nm chips now, so would require a new mobo and possibly no DDR4 for mainstream until Skylake (rumored to be postponed until 2016) Haswell -E is looking like best choice tbh if it plays out like that. Wander if AMD can offer anything near competitive?

Get the impression [H] didn't have to much time to put that review together. Would have been good to see a high end 2/3/4 way GPU setup tested against haswell to see if the extra PCI-E lanes come into their own on X79.

they do for multi gpu set ups etc..like trifire

The fail is strong with this one.

"Using our tried and true Kill-A-Watt method at the wall, the 4960X was 166 watts at idle and 353 watts at full load. The 3830K was 201 watts at idle, and 378 watts at full load."

1.4v to reach 4.6GHZ, what they smoking over at Intel, did they just spend the last 12 months on a beach somewhere ?

If I had to use these volts on my 3930k to get that oc I would not be happy.

Worse still

Moving past 4.5GHz to 4.6GHz proved to require a good bit more voltage, but that was all; 1.4v. You could about ~4.6GHz several different ways. 36x129 (4.644GHz) with a 1722MHz memory bus at 1.4v was stable. Pushing to 4.7GHz got close to the edge of stability using Prime95. I could get the Ivy Bridge-E to 46x102.2 (4.701GHz) with a 1600MHz memory bus and vCore at 1.44v but also had to push the VCCSA to 1.4v (stock is 1.2v). At 4.7GHz the system would BSOD after about 40 minutes.

VCCSA to 1.4v, what is going on here?

I hope HARDOCP have got it wrong, but something tells me they are right.

All my X79 gear is now gone.

Surely I can't be the only one thinking die shrink + retaining 130w should have given far far better results then what we're seeing?

Back to the age old situation of if you move over from a recently released chip and get a duff clocker, you'll end up worse off.

Lets say you move from SB-E that can do 4.9ghz DDR2500, to IB-E and find your new chip will only do 4.7ghz DDR2600, any improvement is going to be instantly void.

We desperately need AMD to catch up.

lets hope they got a bad clocker

have a feeling it will do better than that, tis true about needing a huge voltage bump past 4.6ghz,atleast on z77 ivy

what board did they test it on? ^^^

current x79 or newer

iirc they used the new X79 Deluxe.

I was not happy with their choice of mobo either, you would have thought they would have used a RIVE which is a very well known quantity and easy to compare SB-E results with.

By the look of it I won't be going IB-E, I have 4 hungry cards to feed and 4.6 on IB-E is not going to do it.:(

Here is another hint in reply to one of my posts on Overclock3d

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showpost.php?p=681351&postcount=9

Things are not looking good for IB-E

I'm not sure it really matters tbh, most people are holding off until Haswell -E. We know that's when the real upgrade is going to happen, more cores, much better efficiency and DDR4. Ivy -E is just a stop gap, I doubt even those already on X79 will bother to upgrade, really just not worth it. Save the pennies for Haswell -E imho.

Can AMD strike back in the meantime?

well iam not buying a new X79 M/B and ivy-E on the basis of a dead end upgrade with very little increase in performance if any at all. SB on X79 that i have now is fine. my next Upgrade will be GFX cards just want to see what the new AMD cards have to offer before i jump into the GTX-780 upgrade!

You need a very good ivy_E chip just like the 4 core ivy chip to get a good clocker with low volts. you cant blame the tim this time it will purely be luck of the draw and 1.4v for 4.6g is no good to me. and who wants to buy a new X79 based M/B for Ivy-E only?

8pack will be a good guide on how many binned chips untill he finds a good one, but to eveyone else thats out of the question £££££££££ to keep buying chips till you find a good one?

Haswell-E DDR4 new chipset altogether seems sensible even if your loaded!;)

The worrying part about it is if Haswell-E follows the tread set by IB, Haswell and IB-E it will also be a poor overclocker.

If there are any superhero's at AMD reading this

We need you now more than ever, can you save the enthusiast PC market for us please.

Oh well, at least Haswell -E is shaping up nicely, a proper upgrade.. 8 cores and DDR4. I'm starting to save my pennies now lol. 4770K is ideal until then ..

Well that was another reason l did not upgrade from my X58, so another year is not going to kill me.

So might just buy another 670 to go sli and take them over H-E 8cores+DDR4.:)

The enthusiast PC could become a very limited market in the future, driven only buy the few with the £££ to say mine is faster than yours. people's needs change and with the new consoles due out soon even more will ditch the PC gaming desktop!
