*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

I've had my 4S for nearly 2 years and I'm due an upgrade soon :p There are times when my phone does lag on app switching (Facebook I'm looking at you!) which is primarily down to the lack of memory. The 5 is definitely smoother compared to mine, and the 5S will typically be a lot faster again.

Got mine on launch - has it been that long? :o Not found it lagging - might be worth a restore maybe?

Got a 4S serving me well at the moment, but will keep an eye on this. Bit worrying the amount of people already decided on what to get when it hasn't been revealed yet :p

What constantly amazes me is how many people seem to have the "I'm due a free upgrade" mentality.

I can't count how many people I know who don't seem to realise that the phones aren't free but are subsidised by the contract. When I tell them I decided to stick with my phone at the end of my contract and instead switch to SIM-only and am paying a tenner a month, they usually seem totally shocked and don't understand how I'm paying so little compared to their £40pm contracts.

If you understand all of this and still want to upgrade then by all means do so but personally I refuse to get into the endless upgrade cycle just for the sake of it, nor do I believe that a two year old phone is suddenly obsolete. My 4S is just as good now as it was the day I bought it two years ago.

That's my 2p :p

Well said :) I bought my 4S outright when new, kept it in perfect condition since so can be sold when I decide to change. Thank god for Giffgaff £7.50 a month :)

Do we think the following seems likely?

10th September - new phones announced around 6pm UK time.
13th September - pre-sales go live at 9am UK Time.
20th September - deliveries commence.

It's not lagging as per se, but it is definitely due to a lack of free memory. If launching a new app or a hibernating app, and there's not enough memory available, iOS asks all the other 'running' apps currently open in the background to free up any resources they don't currently need. This process isn't instant, and the result is that you are waiting a lot longer for an app to launch or restore.

The iPhone 5 is better in this regard as it has double the memory available, but also because it has a faster SoC and 33% more peak memory bandwidth on top of that.

There are some quite nifty apps you can download that show system resource usage too.

I'm running iOS 7 atm and it's as smooth as iOS 6 has been - except I can tell when there's no more free memory available.

Besides, I'm a sucker for new tech :p

If the 5C (or will it just be iphone C?) is basically an iphone 5 but with a plastic back cover then I can't see it being any cheaper than about £429 although that would be enough for it to be 'free' on many contracts which is something many people stick to.

I just can't see it being a full iphone 5 spec-wise and being sub £300

If the plastic iPhone is sold in the UK it will be used as leverage to keep the 5S/6 prices high and immovable.

We will all find that when you come to upgrade when the next one is announced that there will be absolutely zero loyalty bonus from all of the service providers.

I cant see from all the rumours anything exciting though. I think ill wait for the IPhone 6, im on 5 atm.
Ive been tempted to go onto the S4 as apples actually boring me a bit now.

I'd agree with that. I think with iPhones a 2yr upgrade schedule is about right. I'm on a 4S and didn't see a big enough benefit with the 5 but will probably be going for a 5S.

Currently on a 5 and the only upgrade I'm interested is iOS 7 and that's free, I won't be jumping on the apple cart this time round just for a "faster" phone and a fingerprint reader that pretty much adds nothing to the experience apart from saving me 3 seconds swiping and pressing 4 keys.

Happens every tock cycle with the S, all the current generation owners say they can't see a reason to upgrade. Which is in part absolutely right, the device is just about a year old so there should be no reason to upgrade. :D

Performance wise I can't see the S being a massive hike, but the camera/dual flash/fingerprint reader/NFC/improved 4G modem would be good reasons I guess. As an iPhone 4 user, I'm definitely interested in an upgrade.

Updated the op with a couple of pics, and the MacRumors news and updates link (saves me regurgitating their stuff lol).

Got a GS4 myself but interested to see how the 5S camera turns out considering how well the 5 holds its own against recently released phones. Going to be a beast!

I think the chaos caused by the software release will be more interesting than the 5S announcement. I'm also intrigued by the approach they'll take with the low cost 5C option.

Very interesting overall.

I'm a 4S user. I'm torn between the 5C and the 5S.

Not sure if the 5S has enough to make me want to pay a premium for it, if the 5C has the innards of a 5.
